LAW May 22 Update - Shelley Done with TNA

John Pollock / May 22, 2012 - 6:17pm

**Tonight the ‘Smackdown’ tapings are in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania but no matches have been announced for the tapings as of yet.

**A big thank you to all of the listeners that came down to the Fox and Fiddle last night for the live edition of ‘Review-a-Raw’ and I’m sure we will do another one of these in the future. To catch the show you can download it now at http://fightnetwork.com/data/podcasts/1130/2012-05-22.mp3 featuring Wai Ting, Dan Lovranski and myself chatting ‘Raw’ and hearing live feedback from listeners. You can also grab the show off of iTunes and the free Stitcher app on smart phones.

**WWE ‘Raw’ did a 3.04 rating on Monday night and averaged 4,460,000 viewers.

**Alex Shelley is done with TNA as his contract was up and he opted not to re-sign. The use of Shelley over the past year was bizarre as Chris Sabin injured his knee and rather than use Shelley on television they kept him off that entire time with the exception of a week or two. They aired a few video packages plugging the return of the Motor City Machine Guns and they came back, lost at ‘Lockdown’ and then disappeared after the first Open Fight Night where they were denied a Tag Title Match by Hogan.

**The WWE ‘Revolution’ videos they have been airing on their website that no one is talking about is set to feature the reveal next Monday on ‘Raw’. The latest video features a quick image of Matt Morgan. Morgan has stated earlier this year that his contract wasn’t up with TNA until the fall but in that same interview didn’t rule out a return to the WWE. Unless I’ve missed it in passing I don’t believe any of these videos have been on television and little to no buzz online for them either.

**John Cena Vs Big Show was announced on ‘Raw’ for the June 17th ‘No Way Out’ pay-per-view in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Based on television last night it looks like Randy Orton Vs Chris Jericho, CM Punk Vs Daniel Bryan and perhaps Sheamus Vs Alberto Del Rio will be the directions they go for that show.

**Brian Pillman would have turned 50-years old today.

**We will be back with Review-a-Wai tomorrow chatting the ‘King of the Ring’ from 1996 featuring the Austin 3:16 promo and Owen Hart on commentary for the entire show.

LAW MMA UPDATE

**Nick Diaz appeared in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Monday and was denied in his attempt to reduce his suspension after testing positive for marijuana metabolites following his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143. Diaz’s one-year suspension was sustained and retroactive to February 3rd so there is no chance of him fighting later this year. Diaz and his lawyer Ross Goodman tried to argue that the test did not prove he smoked ‘in competition’ and that it would have had any effect on the fight but the commission shot down the argument. Diaz interestingly enough said he found marijuana to be a performance enhancer when he was sparring and help with his reflexes. There was also a source of controversy regarding his medical marijuana card that Diaz stated he had in California but in fact never officially received the card but only a recommendation that was valid for one-year that he received in years past on a number of occasions. The argument that one has a medical marijuana card and therefore should be above commission law doesn’t work for me because this isn’t a debate about whether marijuana is healthy or not for a fighter but rather an enforcement of rules and banned substances across the board and every commission has the right to ban certain substances regardless of whether a fighter can obtain said substance legally. Caffeine is also a banned substance to the point that energy drinks and coffee are not allowed in the locker room at some events and if someone were found to have certain levels of caffeine in their system they would also be subject to punishment regardless of the argument that coffee is legal.

**I was a guest today on the 5-year anniversary show of The MMA Show podcast with Mauro Ranallo along with guests Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Ariel Helwani, Javier Mendez, Michelle Gutierrez and David Dinkins from Showtime. The full podcast is available for download at http://radio.thescore.com/episodes/the-mma-show-may-22.

**Last Friday’s edition of TUF Live only did 821,000 viewers on FX and was the lowest mark of the season. What was more disappointing is the fact that only did you have two of the quarter-final fights but also the tease of Urijah Faber’s opponent being announced and it didn’t result in any added interest. I cannot imagine that the current incarnation of the show will extend to the next season and some major changes will be made after this season.

**Bellator on the other hand scored their highest number of the season with 209,000 viewers tuning in on Friday night for Bellator 69 featuring the finals of the Middleweight tournament between Maiquel Falcao and Andreas Spang.

**The second episode of UFC ‘Prime Time’ did 544,000 viewers on Friday night and up slightly from the 540,000 viewers in Week 1.

**It was reported by USA Today that Josh Barnett will fight one more time for Strikeforce and then his future will be up in the air regarding whether or not he is signed by the UFC. Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier is also scheduled to fight one more time for Strikeforce as well and then is a lock to move over to the UFC.
