LAW July 9 Update - WWE Signs Pac, Del Rey, Taven

John Pollock / July 9, 2012 - 4:35pm

**Tonight ‘Raw’ takes place in Denver, Colorado and then will be taping ‘Smackdown’ right after ‘Raw’ concludes so all the television leading into the pay-per-view this Sunday will be shot by the end of tonight. Zack Ryder is scheduled to be the General Manager on ‘Smackdown’ but no one was announced for ‘Raw’ tonight as the G.M.

**Last night’s edition of The LAW featuring Dan Lovranski and Jason Agnew recapping TNA ‘Destination X’ and taking tons of your calls on the Austin Aries title win is available at http://fightnetwork.com/data/podcasts/1174/2012-07-09.mp3. We also chat with Dave Meltzer of the ‘Wrestling Observer Newsletter’

**Review-A-Raw will be posted later tonight with Wai Ting and I chatting tonight’s show and taking your feedback plus an announcement of a big guest scheduled for The LAW this Sunday night.

**PWinsider.com was the first to report that the WWE has signed international star Pac (Ben Satterly) to a contract. Pac debuted in 2004 and has worked all over the world with Dragon Gate in both Japan and the in the U.S. along with Pro Wrestling Guerilla and competed in this past spring’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament with New Japan Pro Wrestling. It is unknown if he will be starting in developmental but the usual protocol is that regardless of experience the company wants their talent to go through the Florida Championship Wrestling system and would expect he will report to Florida first.

**The ‘Destination X’ pay-per-view was paced by two really strong matches featuring Austin Aries defeating Bobby Roode for the TNA Title in a legitimate surprise finish and A.J. Styles and Christopher Daniels tearing the house down with a fantastic ‘Last Man Standing Match’ that woke up the Orlando crowd that were hardly into the majority of the undercard. The Aries win was one of those rare standout moments you will remember that TNA has hardly produced in their history and has been a real negative to me when you look back at ten-years of the company and you don’t have easily identifiable moments and you get that ‘blur’ effect. In this case I feel a lot of people are going to remember this because of the surprise and the big celebration after the match where the title change meant a lot with Aries winning clean over the top guy in the company. This title run is going to be interesting because I believe ultimately the path leads to Bobby Roode and James Storm at ‘Bound for Glory’ but it doesn’t mean Aries cannot hold the title for some time and perhaps lead to a big rematch on television either at the August or September pay-per-view or for their final live edition of ‘Impact’ in August (I’m not a fan of giving too much away on TV but the rules are different in this case because the entire summer is geared more towards ratings and keeping the show live by delivering numbers for Spike). The WWE received noticeable bumps in the ratings when they got behind someone fresh like Edge or CM Punk winning the title for the first time and they must be hoping for a similar jump with Aries in the new spot and I highly doubt you would see a title change until Aries has held the title for a few weeks and the company sees if they have something special and force plans to be changed around.

**Sonjay Dutt suffered a separated shoulder during the Ultimate X Match after delivering a running shooting star press to Kenny King on the mat and was briefly taken out of the match but did return. Dixie Carter tweeted that he was going to be out for a few weeks and Dutt later posted that he was okay. I would expect all of the guys that advanced to the Ultimate X Match are being brought in and of the ones that lost in the tournament matches they already have Kid Kash and Doug Williams under deals but they were largely used to get over the new talent and I wouldn’t be so sure they will be bringing in all of the X guys used on the show.

**The WWE appears to be in acquisition mode as they are also finalizing a deal with Matt Taven, who has worked for Ring of Honor over the past few months on television. It also looks as though long time female standout Sara Del Rey will be signing with the company.

**The next TNA pay-per-view is ‘Hardcore Justice’ on August 12th in Orlando with the commercial promoting three hardcore matches involving the Bound for Glory Series participants.

**TNA sent out a press release today confirming that they will be starting with a three-hour block of programming with this Thursday’s show. The will air a new program called ‘TNA Rewind’ as a lead-in to ‘Impact Wrestling’ at 8pm EST with the goal to get people tuning in earlier and beefing up the earlier segments of Impact.

**Ric Flair has been added to the Gathering of the Juggalos event, which is a four day event beginning on August 8th at Cave in Rock, Illinois. Flair is not scheduled to wrestle at the event and will be hosting the wrestling portion on the main stage with more details to follow.

**The infamous ‘Bash at the Beach’ event from 2000 featuring the Vince Russo semi work/shoot interview on Hulk Hogan took place on this date in Daytona Beach, Florida:

**Kevin Nash turns 53-years old today while Marc Mero turns 52 today and Shelton Benjamin turns 37-years old.

**The Torontoist website had a write up today of their television listings and gave the following review for ‘Impact’:

Of late, iMPACT Wrestling has been putting itself forward as a strong competitor to WWE. This, of course, has not always been the case: iMPACT (which may or may not still be also known as TNA Wrestling, a name which they rightfully seem to be abandoning) has had its share of ups and downs, with a bad habit of letting former WWE castoffs like Jeff Hardy try to compete while visibly drunk and/or high, or giving too much time to Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair (who, in case you have forgotten, are 58 and 63, respectively). However, over the last six months, the company has more or less performed a full turnaround and started pushing the wealth of young talent it has under contract, most notably “The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived,” Austin Aries, and Toronto’s own Bobby Roode, who had an exceptional match this past weekend at the company’s most recent pay-per-view. This is a fine thing, because when wrestling is good, it’s really good (and when it’s bad, it’s really bad), and the more good wrestling, the better. (Spike, 8 p.m.)

LAW MMA UPDATE

**Jonathan Snowden was a guest on ‘The MMA Show’ with Mauro Ranallo on Monday and reported that UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen will be filing a complaint to the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding the knee that Anderson Silva delivered that led to the finish of their fight on Saturday at UFC 148 on the grounds that Silva was aiming for the face of Sonnen even though he clearly hit Sonnen in the chest. This is a tough one for Sonnen to prove because you’re not arguing a foul was committed but rather you are trying to prove intent and that has been a major subject of controversy when it comes to dirty hits in the NHL. Politically it also doesn’t seem like a move that is going to ingratiate Sonnen with the UFC and specifically Dana White, who went out of his way to put over how professional Sonnen was not to complain and is a true fighter at the post fight press conference.

**A light heavyweight bout between Quinton Jackson and Glover Teixeira has been announced for UFC 153 for October 13th in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Jackson has one fight left on his contract and will be entering enemy territory for what could be his final fight with the organization against the highly touted Teixeira. In Teixeira’s UFC he submitted Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 146 and was then the subject of controversy where the UFC wanted Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua to fight Texieira and Shogun and his camp turned the fight down.

**The UFC Fighter Summit is taking place all day today and tomorrow with the majority of the roster being brought in for presentations and speeches on all different aspects of the business including social media, drug awareness and more.

**The weigh-ins for the UFC on FUEL 4 card take place tomorrow in San Jose, California with the following card for Wednesday’s show that kicks off at 5:30pm EST on Facebook and the main card at 8pm ESR on FUEL TV and Sportsnet in Canada:
