LAW July 26 Update - Raw 1000 Draws Huge
John Pollock / July 26, 2012 - 3:21pm
**First off apologies for the lack of updates this week but it’s been a very crazy week with Tuesday pretty much a write off covering all of the UFC 152 events in town and then Wednesday trying to catch up on everything. On a side note I spoke with Michael Bisping, Brian Stann, Joseph Benavidez, Demetrious Johnson and Rory MacDonald on Tuesday and those interviews will be coming out shortly.
**TNA is live with ‘Impact Wrestling’ tonight at 8pm EST on Spike TV. Dixie Carter has posted that there will be a new authority figure in charge tonight stemming from Hulk Hogan being written out in the interim. The following has also been announced for tonight’s show:
*The debut of Chavo Guerrero
*James Storm Vs A.J. Styles in a BFG Series Match
*Kurt Angle Vs Bully Ray in a BFG Series Match
*Madison Rayne & Gail Kim Vs Tara & Mickie James
*Zema Ion Vs ??? for the X Division Title
*Sam Shaw in the Gut Check Challenge
**Later tonight Wai Ting and I will be back with Review-An-Impact chatting tonight’s show and taking your feedback as well as our regular weekly chat with Nate Milton.
**For fans of The LAW Jason Agnew hosts a non-wrestling show every Thursday night called ‘The Late Shift’ at 10pm EST on Newstalk 1010 focusing on the world of comedy. Tonight Mick Foley will be joining Agnew to chat about the Just for Laughs Festival this weekend in Montreal and his entrance into the world of standup comedy over the past few years.
**RAW 1000 was a huge hit ratings wise with the three-hours averaging an audience of 6,020,000 and did a rating of 3.84 (the highest three-hour Raw they have ever done). If you take out the first hour the final two-hours did a 4.02 and 6,310,000 viewers. The final angle at the end of the show involving The Rock, CM Punk and John Cena was watched by just under 7-million viewers so it was a phenomenal night for the company and they shot their big angles in front of as large of an audience as they are going to get and hopefully ‘SummerSlam’ will receive a trickle effect from those tuning in and seeing the angle at the end of the show.
**This past week's edition of Review a Wai is up on the site with Wai Ting and I reviewing the WWE 'Great American Bash' 2006 card and chatting with former WWE creative member Court Bauer on the creation of the Punjabi Prison Match, Big Show discusses the match from a 2007 interview on The LAW as well as Dave Meltzer's reaction to the show from the night of the event. The show is up at http://fightnetwork.com/news/32163:podcast-review-a-wai-wwe-great-american-bash-06/.
**There are a lot of issues going on behind the scenes right now between TNA and Velvet Sky. The company is attempting to restructure a number of deals and renegotiate with talent, whose contracts are coming due. At one point Wednesday Sky’s profile was removed from the website but later put back on the site. However, her pictures have been removed from the Knockouts section. Sky has also been de-emphasized on the show since being one of the focal points of the division and was beginning a program with Mickie James.
**A thorough breakdown of the U.S. Olympic wrestling team from The Iron Sheik.
**Dragon Gate USA has two shows coming up this weekend with a card Saturday night in Taylor, Michigan and Sunday in Chicago, Illinois with both airing on iPPV at WWNLive.com.
**Jim Ross appeared on the ‘Hot Clicks’ podcast last week leading into Raw 1000 and discussed numerous topics including recruiting techniques he used, why he isn’t calling Raw every week (which he is going to be asked in every interview he does) and more.
**Tommy Dreamer’s debut ‘House of Hardcore’ event set for October 6th in Poughkeepsie, New York has announced that Adam Copeland will be appearing on the show along with The Steiner Brothers, Rhino, Shawn Daivari, The Sandman, The Young Bucks, Sami Callihan, Chris Masters and Big XLG (formerly Luke Gallows).
**Here is a cool story on former WWE photographer Tom Buchanan on the SLAM website.
LAW MMA UPDATE
**This week’s edition of THE MMA REPORT W/ JOHN POLLOCK is up online at http://iphone.tsn.ca/tsnpodcasts/MMAREPORT-JULY26-2012.mp3 featuring my chats with Dr. Margaret Goodman, the President of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) discussing the current state of drug testing, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and a number of other topics. Plus I chat with Loretta Hunt from SI.com on the UFC’s return to FOX next weekend, Hector Lombard’s performance at UFC 149 and more. We also have a RSS feed set up for the show itself (this is independent of The LAW) at http://themmareport.podbean.com/feed/ and you can also catch the show on Friday nights at Midnight EST and Sunday nights right after The LAW at 1am EST on TSN 1050 Toronto.
**The MMA Report with John Pollock is also now available on iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/mma-report-john-pollock/id548343539 and is also available on the free Stitcher app for smart phone users.
**It was revealed on Wednesday night that Frank Mir will fight Daniel Cormier on September 29th for the Strikeforce organization in what will be Cormier’s final bout with the company before being transferred over to the UFC. It was also announced this past week that Gilbert Melendez will defend his Lightweight Title on that show against Pat Healy.
**Ben Rothwell is off of the UFC on FOX 4 card where he was scheduled to fight Travis Browne due to an ankle injury. Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting reported that Devin Cole was offered the fight but that has yet to be confirmed. It was thought they could reshuffle the card because prior to the Rothwell injury it was discovered that Rob Broughton would not be able to fight on the same card against Matt Mitrione due to Broughton having a visa issue. Mitrione was apparently offered the fight but has decided not to take it and will not compete on the card.
**As a result the UFC has moved the Mike Swick Vs DaMarques Johnson fight to the main card of FOX joining Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua Vs Brandon Vera, Lyoto Machida Vs Ryan Bader and Jamie Varner Vs Joe Lauzon on August 4th in Los Angeles.
**MMA Fighting broke the news that Eddie Alvarez will fight at least one more time for the Bellator Fighting Championships. Alavrez will headline the Bellator 76 event set for October 12th in Windsor, Ontario but no opponent has been announced as of yet. This will be the final fight on Alvarez’s contract with Bellator and will almost be a lock for the UFC to go after to sign before Bellator gets onto Spike TV in January.
**The UFC 149 preliminary card on FX averaged 1,000,000 viewers leading into the pay-per-view and headlined by Nick Ring defeating Court McGee by unanimous decision.
**Tickets for UFC 152 in Toronto go on sale to the public tomorrow at 10am EST. There are already tickets available to ‘Fight Club’ members. The card takes place on September 22nd at the Air Canada Centre headlined by Demetrious Johnson Vs Joseph Benavidez to crown the first Flyweight Champion along with Brian Stann Vs Michael Bisping in a middleweight bout and Rory MacDonald Vs BJ Penn.
**Rousimar Palhares has suffered an injury in training and has been taken off of the UFC 150 card on August 11th in Denver, Colorado. Palhares was set to fight Yushin Okami and will be replaced by Buddy Roberts, who was already training for the event to fight Chris Camozzi, who is also off the card due to an injury.
**Despite a lot of talk about where Hector Lombard will be going following this past weekend’s performance he has stated on Twitter that he will not be moving down to welterweight.
**The UFC has announced that Vitor Belfort will meet Alan Belcher at UFC 153 on October 13th in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in a middleweight bout.
