Montreal, August 12, 2012 – Canadian judoka Arthur Margelidon earned himself a bronze medal in the Under 73 kg category at the Berlin European Judo Junior World Cup, taking place this weekend in Germany.
Margelidon concluded the competition with five victories and one defeat, besting the Netherlands’ Thomas Snidjers, Brazil’s Caio Brigida, Austria’s Juergen Truffner and Georgia’s Phridon Gigani to score a semi-final berth.
Another Georgian judoka - Levan Gugava – halted Margelidon’s progress; Gugava went on win the title, while the Quebec native faced and defeated France’s Mathieu Little – in the process earning the third step on the podium.
“I’m proud of my medal, but I’m also a bit frustrated by the errors I made in the semi-final that stopped me from accessing the final bout for the gold or silver, I think I would have been able to get to there,” commented Margelidon. The bout against Gugava – a left-handed judoka – went well until overtime. “I just made a tiny error, and he was able to score an Ippon. In general though, I’m happy with the way things went, I had a big day of matches and I faced very solid competitors,” the Canadian concluded.
In action in the Under 66 kg category, Quebec’s Antoine Bouchard finished the weekend with three victories and two defeats – earning him 9th place.
On the tatami in the Under 90 kg class, Marc Deschênes won his first bout, then lost the following two matches.
Ontario’s Zachary Burt was beaten in both of his matches in the Under 81 kg class.
In women’s competitions, Monika Burgess – who won a bronze medal in the Under 63 kg category last week at the Prague European Judo Junior World Cup – had a less successful weekend in Berlin. After a win in her first bout, she folded in the next round when matched against American judoka Jenny Werner.
Ontario’s Kaitlyn Dennis was eliminated in her first bout in the Under 57 kg category.
