LAW Aug 12 Update - Red Bastien Passes Away

John Pollock / August 12, 2012 - 4:22pm

**We start off with the unfortunate news of the passing of Red Bastien, one of the most innovative performers of his era that brought about a high flying style that was well ahead of its time. Bastien formed a number of tag teams during his career where he worked with Lou Klein (who wrestled during this time as his brother, Lou Bastien) and later Billy Red Lyons, a team that held in very high regard for their style. Among the many offices he worked for during his career included the WWWF, AWA, WCW out of Australia where he teamed with native star Mario Milano among many others. Bastien was heavily involved within the industry long after he retired serving as a trainer in California and was responsible for training a young Steve Borden and Jim Hellwig when Rick Bassman was packaging a group of bodybuilders as ‘Powerteam U.S.A.’ and sending promo shots across the country after conceiving the gimmick and then seeking out bodybuilders to play the role and team them how to work (which is where Bastien fit in). It was Jerry Jarrett who took a chance on Borden and Hellwig when no one else was interested and was cited as the reason for Sting coming back to work with TNA decades later because of Jarrett giving him his start in the business. Bastien will always be closely tied to the Cauliflower Alley Club, where he served as President from 2001 – 2007 and had to step down as he began to suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and eventually was put in a medical facility in 2010 where he stayed until his passing. Bastien was 81-years old when he died on Saturday.

Tune in tonight at 11pm EST on TSN 1050 Toronto and online here on the website.

**The Ring of Honor ‘Boiling Point’ iPPV took place Saturday night but the show has yet to be put on the ROH website for those that have bought the show so I have not seen the show and hopefully will be able to watch it in time for a quick review on Review-A-Raw Monday night.

**The G-1 Climax Finals took place earlier today from Sumo Hall with the final set of matches for the A and B block. The finals came down to former IWGP Champion and 2012 breakout performer Kazuchika Okada defeating Karl Anderson (who has been given a huge push after tag partner Matt Bloom a.k.a. Tensai returned to the WWE) and will get a future title shot with the win. This was a very strong G-1 tournament featuring Naomichi Marufuji as the outsider from NOAH and producing some great matches in the tournament.

**The ‘Raw’ television tapings are in Dallas, Texas tomorrow night with Shawn Michaels advertised for the show and the WWE has also announced CM Punk Vs Big Show to kick off the show at 8pm EST. The ‘Smackdown’ tapings are Tuesday night in Austin, Texas for the final show before the pay-per-view.

**New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that they have signed Kazushi Sakuraba to a deal, which could lead to a lot of interest within the country with the current depressed state of MMA within Japan. Sakuraba began his career as a professional wrestler and trained under Karl Gotch and working for the UWFi before he transitioned over to mixed martial arts full time. Sakuraba was the most important figure when it came to the rise of PRIDE over a decade ago following his legendary fight with Royce Gracie and subsequent fights with other members of the Gracie family where he became ‘The Gracie Hunter’. Business continued to climb with Sakuraba’s series of fights with Wanderlei Silva and took PRIDE to the next level where they could fill the Tokyo Dome and heights no one ever envisioned for the upstart organization. Unfortunately Sakuraba frequently took fights that were just crazy and gave up too much size and the damage added up. He lost his last four MMA fights with the most recent coming last September for the DREAM organization.

**Abraham Washington (Brian Jossie) getting everything out of his system:

If I smoked crack or did steroids I'd get suspended but I made a joke and tweeted support Linda and Igetfired. #Doesn'tAddUp #Hmmmmm.

They didn't do shit to Randy Orton when he called Kelly Kelly a slut, you see the double standard? Fuck politics. #AWForLife.

Im a HUGE Cena fan, but Cena made fatjokes
w/ King, genitalia jokes n homo jokes. Orton bashes K2, Vince mocks JR! #FuckUWWE

so stealing a car, having a yng girl trying to fuck 3 guys at once and not to mntion the Tensai thing is ok, but no jokes? #B

So Vince can continually bash @JRsBBQ by teasing his ball palsy but yet your comments where deemed worse? Beastar
my ass.

VINCE MCMAHON CAN SAY THE "N" WORD ON NATIONAL T.V. BUT @AWPromotions CAN'T TELL A JOKE.............whats wrong with this picture???

You said one Kobe Bryant rape joke and you got fired. Isn't Mike Tyson a convicted rapist? Yet he is in the HoF. Hypocrisy.

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to my fucking non PG world!!! Where all bets are off and I tell it like it is. Fuck the Bull Shit, I'm legit!"

**The Rock is in London, England for the summer Olympics and the closing ceremonies today.

**The LAW's UFC 150 post show with Jason Agnew and myself recapping the card and chatting with Fight Network analyst Robin Black is up on the site and available for download at

**Here are the results from the UFC 150 card held at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on Saturday night in front of an announced crowd of 15,008 and a live gate of only $660,000 so the paid attendance was down huge from the last time they ran the venue last September for UFC 135 (Jon Jones Vs Quinton Jackson) where they had a gate of just over $2,000,000. In terms of a numbered pay-per-view you might have to go all the way back to 2003 for a gate that low.

*Nik Lentz over Eiki Mitsuoka by TKO at 3:45 of Round 1
*Chico Camus over Dustin Pague by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
*Erik Perez over Ken Stone by TKO at 0:17 of Round 1
*Michael Kuiper over Jarred Hamman by TKO at 2:16 of Round 2
*Dennis Bermudez over Tommy Hayden by guillotine choke at 4:43 of Round 1
*Max Holloway over Justin Lawrence by TKO at 4:49 of Round 2
*Yushin Okami over Buddy Roberts by TKO at 3:05 of Round 2
*Jake Shields over Ed Herman by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
*Donald Cerrone over Melvin Guillard by KO at 1:16 of Round 1
*Benson Henderson over Frankie Edgar by split decision (48-47, 46-49, 48-47) to keep the UFC Lightweight Title

**The following $60,000 bonuses were handed out after the card:
*Fight of the Night – Donald Cerrone Vs Melvin Guillard
*Knockout of the Night – Donald Cerrone
*Submission of the Night – Dennis Bermudez

**Despite all the talk this past week of Alistair Overeem possibly getting the next title shot and trying to appeal to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to get licensed early he will not be getting the next title shot. Dana White confirmed that Cain Velasquez will fight Junior Dos Santos for the Heavyweight Title on December 29th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

**Nate Diaz will be getting the next shot at Benson Henderson following last night’s fight but no date has been announced for that fight.

**The plan is for Donald Cerrone to fight Anthony Pettis in his next fight and the winner likely getting the winner of Henderson Vs Diaz in 2013 for the Lightweight Title.

**Tyrone Mims, an amateur fighter making his debut on Saturday night at a card in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina died tragically after his fight Saturday when he returned to the dressing room. Mims was stopped in the second round by a fighter named Blake Poore and it is believed that Mims suffered a heart attack in the backstage area and the rest of the card was cancelled.
