A Look At The Top Matches At 'SummerSlam'

Sam Pierce / August 18, 2012 - 3:19pm

Aaaahhh, August, my favourite month of the year! It used to be October because of Bragging Rights... Me and my buddy Mason loved that pay per view.

Oh well. What better combination than hot weather, cold brews and two guys in speedos beating the crap out of each other to end the summer off right! This Sunday, August 19th, from Los Angeles, California (really? again? lucky bastards...), WWE presents the biggest event of the summer, Summerslam! It's a good looking card, one that is headlined by an extremely personal contest between Brock Lesnar and Triple H, as well as a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship as CM Punk defends against John Cena and the Big Show. I'm pumped, are you?!

It seems like just yesterday when Brock Lesnar attacked Triple H and broke his arm, igniting a feud that will see its first actual matchup this Sunday at Summerslam. This says a lot because considering Lesnar hasn't been on Raw very often since then, the buildup has been surprisingly strong especially this past week on Raw when Lesnar took his brutality to another level by breaking the arm of Triple H's best friend, Shawn Michaels. Apparently Shawn forgot that Hunter put him in a wheel chair via several sledgehammer shots on an already worn out back after a grueling Non Sanctioned match between the two at Summerslam 2002. It seems like a lot of people in wrestling have bad memories. Anyway, there's a lot riding on the outcome of this match. In order for Lesnar to stay relevant and be marketable as a legitimate threat to whomever he faces at Wrestlemania next year, he MUST win this match. Unfortunately, I said that last September when CM Punk faced Triple H at Night of Champions, right after Punk's huge Summer push. And we all know what happened there. Oh, for those that don't, Punk lost (WTF?). The predicted outcome of this match seems to be cut right down the middle amongst the community. Some say Lesnar will win, others say Triple H will. No matter who does, I'm sure this will be an entertaining way to close the biggest event of the summer. It could go either way, who's with me?

On paper, the Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship between CM Punk, John Cena and the Big Show seems pretty generic. Throw two top superstars in there as challengers, rinse and repeat. I’m not saying that this won't be a good match, as I'm sure it'll be a solid triple threat. We've just seen this done way too many times before. Not to mention that it'll end up being a one on one match for most of the time between Punk and Cena as Show lays outside the ring, catching his breath. Don't expect anything too out of the ordinary to happen here. What you can expect though, is for Punk to retain and start a program solely with Cena as next month's Night of Champions pay per view takes place in Cena's hometown of Boston. Punk's recent heel turn is the only thing creating any sort of hype around this match, whatsoever. Will he take further action to prove that he deserves respect? I hope this match evolves Punk's storyline in some way or else me and a lot of other people, I'm sure, will be really disappointed.

Another interesting matchup see's Mr. Money in the Bank, Dolph Ziggler take on the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla, Chris Jericho in a battle of two fan favourite heels. For anyone who keeps up with pro wrestling message boards and news sites, we all know that Jericho is supposedly leaving the WWE after Summerslam for a tour with his band, Fozzy. For the record, I never thought they were that good. With that said, I predict that Ziggler will pick up a BIG, much needed victory, which he hasn't had in a while. This is a fantasy come true match for me and could very well be the match of the night. I don't know who to root for!

WWE has created an all around solid card for this year's Summerslam pay per view event, a whole lot stronger than the past two years.

It's supposed to be the biggest event of the summer so let's hope it lives up to that! I'll see you guys right back here after the show for my thoughts.

Thanks for reading.
