The LAW's SummerSlam Preview

Live Audio Wrestling / August 19, 2012 - 2:28pm

Tonight the WWE presents the 25th ‘SummerSlam’ (the 25th edition, not the 25th anniversary as they have promoted with the first show in 1988). The LAW will have a recap of the show right after the show tonight at 11pm EST on TSN 1050 Toronto and here is a full preview of the show.

BROCK LESNAR VS TRIPLE H

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
This has been a joke ever since Lesnar lost to Cena in his big return match. And it is obvious from the booking that Triple H will have to get revenge for what Heyman said about his family and Brock attacking HBK. Another example of shit booking based on not what's best for business, but for the petty jollies of the man in charge. Trips wins.

John Pollock

I liked the angle on Monday night but didn’t hit me hard enough to make this a ‘must see’. That being said this is the only match I can say I’m invested in for this Sunday and care to see with the match likely delivering and the interest that Brock Lesnar wrestling generates because it’s novel. The easy booking “in my mind” was Lesnar being brought in as a killer and the money coming in the form of “who can beat this man?” but they decided to answer that question on Night #1 instead of Night #365. The obvious decision is Lesnar wins this match and propels him into a big program leading into WrestleMania but based on the angle, the characters involved and the way this has been positioned as Hunter fighting on behalf of his family and his honor – I’m not convinced and Hunter and Brock close the show with Hunter succeeding rather than failing in the big culmination.

CM PUNK VS BIG SHOW VS JOHN CENA FOR THE WWE TITLE

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
Personally, I would keep the belt on Punk until he challenges Rock at the Rumble and drops the title there. It does nothing to put it on either Cena or Show, so it's the logical choice even without the Rock's involvement. Punk retains.

John Pollock

I have always been an advocate of the WWE Title Match going on last but on this card I feel it would be a mistake and Lesnar Vs Triple H is the true main event and deserves that main card slot. Whatever reasoning there was to make this a three-way instead of a straight up singles match with Punk and Cena the proof is the pudding that it didn’t elicit any interest and this match is watered down with three bodies. The Punk turn has yet to solidify so we have babyface John Cena, tweener CM Punk and I don’t know what Big Show is after he was portrayed as a “giant” for months and then was subservient to Daniel Bryan this past week. Punk should certainly keep the title with the line on ‘Raw’ that he would “never stab anyone in the back” and that is how he keeps the title – by literally taking a knife and stabbing someone in the back...or something figuratively resembling that phrase.

SHEAMUS VS ALBERTO DEL RIO FOR THE WORLD TITLE

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
This will be a good match in the ring, but the build really hasn't been that captivating. The old "I'm canceling this match when we all know by the time the PPV rolls round it will be back" routine does not really work in this day and age. Because I think Punk will retain in the other major title match, I could see them doing a switch here. But even if they do, the feud will most likely continue.

John Pollock

A few weeks ago Alberto Del Rio said on ‘Raw’ that he was not participating in any more matches until SummerSlam and I thought it was a cool way to build up their match as this big ‘fight’ but they changed their minds and he worked the next Smackdown and every show after that. This is just another match to me and the only interest comes in whether Dolph Ziggler might cash in his briefcase or not but I’m suspecting not and Sheamus retains.

KANE VS DANIEL BRYAN

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
I think Bryan should go over here because Kane is basically coasting at this stage of his career on a gimmick that is burnt out. Bryan has really struck a chord with fans and they react huge every time he comes out. Bryan goes over and gets back in the title picture.

John Pollock
Kane was absent from all television this week so it didn’t get any kind of late push and is just another match on the card involving one very over performer right now in Daniel Bryan. The storyline of Bryan’s anger management leads me to believe he loses yet again on Sunday. I assume Charlie Sheen is not involved or else it was a waste outside of coverage post-SummerSlam, which the company does love receiving. I do feel Bryan right now is the best performer on the roster and is a huge asset to the company with ‘Raw’ being three-hours and knowing you can throw him in with just about anyone and get a lengthy and quality outing.

CHRIS JERICHO VS DOLPH ZIGGLER

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
This should be a great match, and with Jericho off to rock with Fozzy for the next few months, this is the perfect time for him to lose and take a break until they need him next. Dolph wins.

John Pollock

I have enjoyed the program between these two with the story of whether Jericho still has what it takes to compete with the younger guys and Ziggler representing that group. This has only meant more TV time and exposure for Ziggler to develop his personality further to a wider audience is working with one of the least selfish people in the industry when it comes to elevating younger talent. Jericho is done after Monday and if I was planning this out would certainly have Ziggler win and do it cleanly to establish himself as the “winner” of the feud but in WWE they tend to go the opposite and I expect Jericho to win Sunday and then an angle is done on Monday for either a rematch and something to write out Jericho.

THE MIZ VS REY MYSTERIO FOR THE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
I could definitely see them putting it on Rey after he has been gone so long and this would be a way to get him back in the mix, but he also really doesn't need a title since he connects with the fans already. But Miz means so little that I could totally see them going for the feel good return moment and Rey wins.

John Pollock
The build up for this match consisted of a 619 delivered to Miz on ‘Smackdown’, it’s just a match but should be good for the time it’s allotted. Mysterio was the first guy to ever pull a really strong singles match out of The Miz way back when Miz was still teaming with Morrison and I’ve found these two gel well together. I expect The Miz to keep the title in this one.

KOFI KINGSTON & R-TRUTH VS THE PRIME TIME PLAYERS FOR THE TAG TITLES

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
This is an interesting one where petty booking could easily mess this up. Do they let the PP get that first big win or do they bury them because their ex-manager said a couple of the wrong things on Twitter? Personally, I think this should end in controversy and they continue the feud for a bit before they do the actual title switch. But they could kill it dead and just have the champs retain.

John Pollock
The company has certainly taken steps to put more of a focus (ie ‘a focus’) on the tag division. I expect a title change in this match with the Prime Time Players losing AW and it’s clearly a team that they are high on right now and could use something and the titles sort of fill that void that their mouthpiece left.

SANTINO MARELLA VS ANTONIO CESARO FOR THE U.S. TITLE

Dan ‘The Mouth’ Lovranski
Say bye-bye Santino as Claudio Castagnoli, I mean, Antonio Cesaro, begins his ascension to the top.

John Pollock
I am really high on Antonio Cesaro and his potential and I’m a bit surprised he has gotten much during his time on the main roster. He has a phenomenal look, he is an international talent that the company covets and is a very good worker. The title is useless on Santino Marella (and you can argue the title is useless on anyone at this point) but I would love to see Cesaro win the U.S. Title and reclaim him the Swiss Champion of the World and take the title hostage from America. I think I’m getting way to in-depth for the YouTube match.
