Weekend MMA Breakdown: Notable Non-UFC Matchups

Cody Saftic / October 5, 2012 - 12:57pm

This weekend is littered with mixed martial arts action across the globe.

With the obvious big league culprits UFC, Bellator and ONE FC presenting stacked cards, I take a look at five unique matchups falling under the radar that you won't want to miss:

5. WHO: David Loiseau (20-10) vs. Chris McNally (5-4)
WHERE: CES MMA: Real Pain, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
WHY IT MATTERS:
David Loiseau has always had the potential to be a top dog in the middleweight division. However, personal doubts and confidence issues have always seemed to plague the Montreal native. His opponent Saturday night, Chris McNally, isn’t exactly world-class opposition, but should give Loiseau enough of a test to gauge where he’s at at this stage in his career. A win over McNally won’t rise his stock very much but it should rise his confidence level, which is exactly what he needs.

4. WHO: Toby Imada (30-16) vs. Luiz Firmino (14-6)
WHERE: CFA 8, Miami, Florida, USA
WHY IT MATTERS:
Toby Imada returns to MMA for the first time in 2012 when he meets PRIDE FC veteran Luiz Firmino in a lightweight scrap. Despite starting his career over 14 years ago, Imada came into the MMA spotlight in 2009 when he scored a highlight reel inverted triangle choke over Jorge Masvidal. A two-time Bellator tournament finalist, Imada enters this contest 7-3 in his last 10 bouts with his three losses coming to notables Eddie Alvarez, Pat Curran and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire. Firmino, meanwhile, comes into the fight fresh off a first-round submission win under the CFA banner in June.

3. WHO: David Bielkheden (17-11) vs. Marcus Davis (20-9)
WHERE: Superior Challenge 8, Malmo, Scania, Sweden
WHY IT MATTERS:
Top-ranked Swedish welterweight David Bielkheden looks to put to rest a disastrous 1-4 run when he takes on fellow UFC veteran Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis. A BJJ black belt, Bielkheden has finished over half of his career opponents, including 11 in the first round. Davis, once of the UFC’s top names, makes his first appearance in MMA since a split decision loss to "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran Chuck O’Neil last year. A natural finisher, the former pro boxer is no stranger to exciting tilts, having won three “Fight of the Night” bonuses over the course of his five-year UFC career.

2. WHO: Jessica Penne (9-1) vs. Naho Sugiyama (8-0)
WHERE:
Invicta FC 3, Kansas City, Kansas, USA
WHY IT MATTERS:
Arguably the two best atomweight fighters in women’s mixed martial arts collide when Reign MMA fighter Jessica Penne squares off with Japan’s Naho Sugiyama. Penne has been looking for an avenue to show off her skills for quite some time, often having to take fights with much larger opponents just to stay active. Now with the formation of Invicta FC, she will finally be able to put her skills on display when she vies for the companies first-ever atomweight title. The undefeated submission grappler Sugiyama fights for the ninth time since turning pro three years ago. The 34-year-old has never fought outside of her native Japan.

1. WHO: Dave Bautista (0-0) vs. Vince Lucero (22-22-1)
WHERE: CES MMA: Real Pain, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
WHY IT MATTERS: This is definitely a freak show fight but there is no denying Dave Bautista’s appeal in the MMA world. For years, fans listened to the former pro wrestler talk about his fighting skills without ever having the opportunity to see them on display. Now for the first time, the 43-year-old will step into the cage when he meets Vince Lucero, a man with 45 fights under his belt. Bautista was originally set to square off with fellow MMA rookie Rashid Evans. However, a jail sentence nixed that fight, forcing CES to look elsewhere for an opponent. Lucero shouldn’t pose a big threat to the Cesar Gracie-trained fighter, but with 22 wins under his belt, it’s not like this is his first time getting in there.
