LAW Oct. 8 Update - Huge Creative Shake Ups in WWE, ROH

John Pollock / October 8, 2012 - 7:46pm

**Dave Meltzer reported late this afternoon that there was a major blow up prior to Raw today in Sacramento that resulted in Brian Gewirtz out of his position on the Raw brand but will remain on as a consultant. Gewirtz has been part of the creative staff dating all the way back to 2000 and an ironman amongst creative members with the turnover rate so high and many hitting burnout. Meltzer added in his report that McMahon was very upset and stated that “I want results or resignations”. The company and specifically McMahon are certainly on edge following last week’s 2.5 rating and thus the panic move of putting Vince on television tonight.

Gewirtz’s official position was Senior Vice-President of Creative with Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh on television) acting as the physical lead writer of the show. I have spoken to a number of people today and the set up was that when the creative team established their “home” (back in Stamford) and “away” (on location for PPV, TV) teams that Gewirtz headed up the home team and Dave Kapoor and Ed Koskey were the head writers on the shows running things. Gewirtz has always been a polarizing figure among those that worked with him and someone that was a direct gateway to Vince McMahon’s tastes when it came to writing television and having the right political savvy in that environment.

**PWinsider.com was the first to report this morning that Jim Cornette is out as booker of Ring of Honor and will be replaced by Hunter “Delirious” Johnsonton, who was working alongside Cornette during this entire time since Cornette replaced Adam Pearce. Cornette will stay on with the company but is not expected to remain as a television character, which is a strange choice given that the overarching story within ROH has been Jim Cornette Vs Kevin Steen without any resolution (though they can always explain his absence and go back to it but the idea of Cornette hand picking one more opponent to beat Steen and disappearing if he loses seems like an easy one for me).

**The LAW from last night is up on the site featuring what I guess is Jim Cornette’s final interview as ROH booker at http://fightnetwork.com/news/33980:oct.-7-edition-of-the-law-w-jim-cornette/ plus Dan Lovranski and Jason Agnew chat with Dave Meltzer, a special LAW Xtra segment for those that download the show with Mouth and I previewing Glory By Honor XI and more.

**Jim Cornette had recently written a reaction to a lot of criticism ROH has been receiving in the current issue of Fighting Spirit Magazine (written prior to the booking change) and FSM has posted the article on their site at http://www.fightingspiritmagazine.co.uk/art/columns/31/the-cornette-conclusion-issue-85.

**Tonight Raw is live from Sacramento, California featuring the return of Vince McMahon to television for a State of the WWE address and John Cena is also back after having a week off. JBL also returns to the show tonight and is expected to be on the commentary desk alongside Michael Cole and Jim Ross for the entire show. The show is going to have competition from both Monday Night Football (New York Jets Vs Houston Texans) and the Major League Baseball playoffs with Game 2 of the Yankees Vs Orioles series. It’s also notable that the tapings are really early on the West Coast because they go live at 5pm Pacific time now.

**We will have a ton to discuss tonight on Review-A-Raw as Wai Ting and I will be reviewing tonight’s Raw, discussing both major creative changes and I will also have a rundown of the New Japan iPPV from earlier today that I checked out. The show will be up on the site later tonight.

**Here are the results from the NJPW King of Pro Wrestling event at Sumo Hall earlier today in Tokyo and airing worldwide on iPPV:
*Tomohiro Ishii & Takashi Iizuka & Toru Yano over Manabu Nakanishi & Yuji Nagata & Strongman
*Rocky Romero & Alex Kozlov over Alex Shelley & Kushida to keep the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles
*Low Ki over Kota Ibushi to win the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title – after the match they had Prince Devitt enter the ring and looks to be the next program
*Davey Boy Smith Jr & Lance Archer over Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima to win the IWGP Tag Titles
*Yujiro Takahashi over Tetsuya Naito
*Kazushi Sakuraba & Katsuyori Shibata over Wataru Inoue & Togi Makabe
*Kazuchika Okada over Karl Anderson
*Shinsuke Nakamura over Hirooki Goto to keep the Intercontinental Title
*Hiroshi Tanahashi over Minoru Suzuki to keep the IWGP Title

**The Smackdown and Main Event tapings take place tomorrow night in San Jose, California.

**CM Punk has a new t-shirt (and it doesn’t say “I’m a Paul Heyman Guy”).

LAW MMA UPDATE

**The November 3rd Strikeforce card is getting killed with injuries following the initial injury to Frank Mir that left heavyweight Daniel Cormier without an opponent. Sunday night was revealed by MMAFighting.com that Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold is out with a wrist injury where he was scheduled to defend against Lorenz Larkin. More injury news came out Monday when MMAWeekly.com reported that Sara McMann is also off the card for her scheduled bout with Liz Carmouche.

**There were some positive ratings news for TUF on Monday when it came out that Friday’s show drew a season high 1,100,000 viewers and significantly up from the all-time series low of 775,000 viewers last week. I would suspect the contributing factor for the jump was having the FX card as a lead-in for people that had stayed home for the card and is your best lead-in possible for the show. This week should be a better indicator if people stick with the show or if it falls back down with a live card preceding the show.

**UFC Lightweight and three-time NCAA All American Shane Roller has announced that he is retiring following his submission loss to Jacob Volkmann at this past Friday’s card on FX in Minneapolis. Roller was recruited into MMA as part of Team Takedown (taking a group of high level wrestlers and helping them transition to MMA) and despite losing in his pro debut he would come back winning his next three fights and then joining the WEC and had a respectable 6-2 record inside the organization including wins over Anthony Njojuani, Danny Castillo and Jamie Varner before WEC shut down and he was absorbed into the UFC. Roller went 2-4 in the UFC including a three-fight losing skid and retires at the age of 33.

**Strikeforce light heavyweight Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante appeared in front of the California State Athletic Commission today to fight his positive drug test from this past May for the banned substance Stanozolol. The commission has opted to uphold the one-year suspension.

**Bellator will be holding open tryouts for Welterweights and Lightweights on November 10th at the ATT facility in Coconut Creek, Florida for their inaugural reality show that launches next year on Spike TV. Fighters must have at least three-fights on their resume with a winning record and be at least 21-years of age.

**Kalvin Hackney is off of the Score Fighting Series card on October 19th in Sarnia, Ontario where he was scheduled to fight Chris Horodecki in the main event. Brad Cardinal will step in to take the fight and it will now be a 150-pound catchweight main event. The card will air live that night on both The Score in Canada and AXS TV in the U.S. with Michael Schiavello and Robin Black calling the action.
