“Blind Judoka” Gets Best Web Series Nomination
The International Academy of Web Television has selected “Blind Judoka” a web series chronicling the journey of Jordan Mouton, an American Paralympic hopeful, has been nominated as the best web series of 2012. Mouton’s inspirational story unfortunately did not culminate in a Paralympic berth, as she was forced to withdraw due to injury, but her tale was none the less compelling.
Mouton began to go blind at the age of eight, losing her sight completely by her teens, but her dreams were not to be slowed down. She was a highly ranked wrestler through early adolescence, and picked up judo at age fifteen during a visit to an Olympic centre in Colorado. It was there that her Paralympic dream was born. The series follows her as her training towards that dream commences.

Taekwondo Master Provides Rare Grading To Nunavut Students
Joel Denis, a Taekwondo instructor from Ottawa, recently made the journey to the frozen tundra of Nunavut to provide training and a much-needed grading session to one of the territory’s biggest schools. Students of taekwondo can only advance to the next belt level by being graded by a fourth-level-or-higher black belt holder, but unfortunately there is not a single one that currently resides in Nunavut. Many of the students training there have been stuck on the same belt level for nearly two years, and without regular grading, they cannot assess where their skill level is at. Denis was able to grade, and promote, over 20 students during his visit.
NCAA Wrestling Quick Hits
The fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes are looking to repeat as champs at this year’s CKLV invitational, which takes place today and tomorrow at the Las Vegas convention centre. The Buckeyes are off to a promising start already this year, having outscored opponents by a total margin of 89-26 and scoring 56 points on bonus points in three dual matches. The charge is led by freshman Kenny Courts who already has 11 wins on the books, followed closely by freshman Mark Martin and sophomore Hunter Stieber, each with 10.
The Western Athletic Conference will soon get a little bigger, as Grand Canyon University has accepted an invitation to upgrade their status from Division II to Division I. Starting in the 2013-2014 season, GCU will begin the reclassification process, which last four years and will see them be ineligible for NCAA championships over that time. GCU’s facilities are among the finest in the country, with a newly built 5,000-seat arena on campus.
Top-ranked Penn State will send most of their top athlete into action this Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open. The Nittany Lions are off to a great start this year, having downed No. 24 Lehigh in their opener, and then dominating West Virginia 44-3 a week later. Penn State are off to a roaring start of their own, and will be in tough in a deep tournament featuring 500 wrestlers from over 30 different teams.
