Weekend MMA Breakdown: Notable Non-UFC Matchups

Cody Saftic / December 7, 2012 - 4:33pm

With Bellator 83 and UFC on FOX 5 scheduled this weekend, let's take a look at some other matchups and fight cards falling under the radar:

5. WHO: Chuck O'Neil (9-5) vs. Keith Jeffrey (8-2-1)
WHERE: CES 14: Battle Tested, Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA
WHY IT MATTERS: TUF 13 alumni Chuck "Cold Steel" O'Neil looks to get back into the win column this weekend against hometown favorite Keith Jeffrey. O'Neil picked up his most impressive victory last year, when he outpointed former UFC standout Marcus Davis under the W-1 banner. The Massachusetts native however failed to keep the momentum going, dropping a unanimous to Kevin Nowaczyk in his next outing. In the opposite corner stands Jeffrey, a solid, but not spectacular submission grappler from Rhode Island. In 11 pro outings, the Tri-Force MMA product has never been finished, and has submitted six of his career opponents.

4. WHO: Ryan Thomas (14-7) vs. Corey Hill (6-4)
WHERE: XFC 21: Night of Champions 2, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
WHY IT MATTERS: UFC veterans Ryan Thomas and Corey Hill will square off in a welterweight affair Friday night. Thomas hasn't exactly had much success on the big stage, going 0-2 in the UFC and then 1-3 in Bellator. To his credit though, those losses have come to fighters such as Ben Saunders, Matt Brown and Ben Askren twice. Corey Hill meanwhile is perhaps best remembered for having the nastiest leg break in UFC history at the companies "Fight for the Troops" event in 2008. Since then, the 34-year-old has gone 3-2 alternating between lightweight and welterweight.

3. WHO: Josh Bryant (14-1) vs. Sean Strickland (9-0)
WHERE: KOTC: Unification, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
WHY IT MATTERS: King of the Cage champ Sean Strickland looks to defend his middleweight title for the first time when he meets Ultimate Fighter season 11 alum, Josh Bryant. Strickland has been a beast on the regional scene, finishing eight of his nine career opponents. With five knockouts and three submissions to his credit, a step up in competition in necessary if he wants to move onto bigger and better things. Bryant received his walking papers from the UFC two years ago after taking a total thrashing from Kyle Noke at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale.

2. WHO: Wilson Reis (15-4) vs. Owen Roddy (11-3)
WHERE: Cage Warriors 50, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom
WHY IT MATTERS: One-time EliteXC champ Wilson Reis will travel to Scotland this weekend to take on Ireland's Owen Roddy in a bantamweight tilt. Reis has always been a solid fighter who failed to step up when it mattered most, as highlighted by his three Bellator tournament entries...all of which ended in defeat. Still, the BJJ world champion is a huge task for any up and coming fighter looking to move up the ranks. His opponent Owen Roddy will be looking to do just that Saturday. Roddy was a virtual unknown fighter until a few months ago when he dominated UFC vet Shannon Gugerty over three rounds. That win marked the seventh straight for the former featherweight who had previously finished all 10 of his opponents.

1. WHO: Kenny Garner (1 1-3) vs. Guram Gugenishvili (11-1)
WHERE: M-1 Challenge 36: Guram vs Garner, Mytishchi, Moscow, Russia
WHY IT MATTERS: Heavyweights Kenny Garner and Guram Gugenishvili are set to collide for the third time for the M-1 title this weekend in Russia. The Georgian born Gugenishvili kicked off this rivalry by choking Garner unconscious two years ago. Garner then avenged the loss this summer, when he scored a third round TKO by doctor's stoppage over the former undefeated fighter. Now both men will meet in a trilogy match to declare the true M-1 champion.
