7th Poomsae Championships Go Gangnam Style – Full Results
Collin Van Ooyen / December 11, 2012 - 11:58pm
The 7th Annual World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships wrapped up this past Sunday in style; Gangnam Style that is. After four days of competition, athletes, volunteers and local youngsters took to the floor to celebrate by participating in the popular dance.
The raucous Colombian crowd loved every second of it, and they were applauded by World Taekwondo Federation President Dr. Chungwon Chue for their vivacious participation. “The wonderful spectators, organizers and volunteers of the city of Tunja were the heroes and heroines of these Championships,” said Chue. “They really created the best atmosphere for our very exceptional athletes to compete to be the world’s best.”
Korea were the top nation of the competition taking home 12 total medals, including seven golds. With 22 separate divisions, the Korean squad managed to medal in over half of them. The Iranian squad wasn’t far behind with 10, and the Americans took third place with six.
Canada only registered a single medal, but they were able to make it count. Charlie Chong took home a gold in individual freestyle, beating out fellow North American Vaslav Ayala Talavera of Mexico.
The host Colombians had a great competition of their own, taking five medals, none more exciting than the gold scored by teenaged Karen Suanche Arias. She was tops in the individual under-17 division, and represented Colombia’s only gold.
Arias’ performance was good enough to earn her tournament MVP honours. Along with Spain’s Jeong Cheol Kim, Su Ji Kang of Korea and Mikaela Calamba of the Philippines.
The big story of the event, however, was the unprecedented level of parity. Although perennial powerhouses like Korea and Iran reigned supreme, almost half of the participating countries took home a medal. This parity was on full display on the final day of competition, as the 16 medals that were available were won by 11 different countries. President Choue believes this trend can be attributed to the growing global popularity of the sport. “Taekwondo has always been, and will continue to be a sport for all,” he said. “Any athlete is welcome to participate, regardless of their background or affiliation of any sport or organization, as long as they are willing to follow our rules.”
