Alberto Del Face-o?
Sam Pierce / December 17, 2012 - 10:34pm
Last week, I read that WWE management was looking to turn Alberto Del Rio into a face. This is due mainly to the lack of hispanic stars on the roster. Rey Mysterio is nearing the end of his career and WWE believes that Sin Cara is nowhere near ready to be in the main event picture. Alberto Del Rio has done pretty much all he can do as a heel so with their limited options, WWE has chosen Del Rio to be the hispanic face of the company. Little did I know, however, that we'd see signs of this transition so soon. On Friday, he was heel. On Sunday, he was face.
Last night at WWE's TLC pay per view, The Miz hosted Miz TV with his guests, 3MB. 3MB began to insult the spanish announce team which caused Ricardo Rodriguez to run out and defend his fellow compadres. 3MB then got physical with the spanish annouce team and Rodriguez. In a surprising fashion, Alberto Del Rio came out to save the day. He got a positive crowd reaction, as well. An impromtu six man tag team match for later in the night was made, featuring 3MB vs. The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and a mystery partner. A subtle handshake between Del Rio and the Miz hinted that Del Rio was indeed turning face.
When it finally came time for the match to take place, I was curious to see how it would play out. Del Rio was clearly on the face team against a stable that the crowd despised. By the way, the mystery partner ended up being a hometown hero, the Brooklyn Brawler. Having him as one of Del Rio's partners increased the overall pop for the team. After Del Rio, The Miz and the Brooklyn Brawler picked up the win, the three celebrated in the ring. Instead of Del Rio's usual cocky attitude, he seemed more appreciative of his parnters hard work, in the match.
There's a few guys who should never, ever jump from heel to face or vice versa. For example, John Cena should always be a face. Randy Orton should always be a heel. They play those roles so well that a switch would only result in a lackluster character. However, somebody like Alberto Del Rio who never reached the level of superstardom that WWE thought he would, a face turn could launch him into a whole other level of popularity. WWE just recently turned The Miz face and in a matter of weeks, he's getting one of the largest pops on the roster. Alberto Del Rio as a face could work and I'm 100% behind it.
Thanks for reading.
