LAW Dec. 19 Update - Daniel Bryan Grants Wish to 7-Year Old
John Pollock / December 19, 2012 - 4:04pm
**The newest edition of Review-A-Wai is up on the site with Wai Ting and I reviewing the October 2005 Ring of Honor “Joe Vs Kobashi” card featuring one of the best matches of the last decade from the Manhattan Center in New York. On the program we are also joined by former ROH booker Gabe Sapolsky, who was booking at this time and takes us behind the scenes of putting this monumental match together and providing some added insight from his point of view. This was a great show to go back and watch and you can check out our show at http://fightnetwork.com/news/35426:review-a-wai-roh-joe-vs-kobashi-w-gabe-sapolsky/ as well as on iTunes by subscribing to Live Audio Wrestling (and it’s free).
**CM Punk Vs Ryback will happen on television on the January 7th edition of Raw in a TLC Match from Tampa, Florida. This is also the same night The Rock is scheduled to be at the show and presumably will go off the air with CM Punk Vs The Rock all set for the Royal Rumble on January 27th.
**WWE Raw on Monday night did a 2.89 rating and averaged 4,230,000 viewers for the Slammy Awards off of hours of 4,290,000 in the first, 4,441,000 in the second and 3,990,000 in the third hour.
**Tommy Dreamer suffered a gash on his forehead during The Shield attack backstage on Monday night and had to go the hospital to receive stitches in his forehead. Dreamer has posted pictures of the wound on his Twitter account. It would seem like an easy idea to have Dreamer return with some “friends” to put The Shield over at a future date.
**Tonight WWE week continues on the USA Network with the annual Tribute to the Troops special, which was taped a few weeks back in Norfolk, Virginia and features the following matches tonight:
*Tensai & Primo & Epico & David Otunga Vs The Great Khali & Sin Cara & Brodus Clay & Hornswoggle
*Alberto Del Rio Vs Ryback
*Eve Torres Vs Layla in a non-title match
*The Miz Vs Damien Sandow
*Kane & Daniel Bryan & R-Truth Vs 3MB
*Big Show & Dolph Ziggler Vs Sheamus & Randy Orton
*Antonio Cesaro Vs John Cena
**The Tribute to the Troops special will air in its complete two-hour format tonight and then a one-hour edited version will air on NBC this Saturday night. When the WWE returned to the USA Network in 2005 it was part of the contract that they would have two NBC specials per year but after they brought back Saturday Night’s Main Event and it fizzled in the ratings they have since gone with the Tribute the Troops along with a end of summer one-hour WrestleMania special from that given year.
**If two-hours of WWE is not enough for you tonight you also have Main Event tonight at 8pm EST on Ion Television in the U.S. with the following matches:
*Santino Marella & Zack Ryder Vs The Prime Time Players
*Daniel Bryan & Kane Vs Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow for the Tag Titles
**Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez at the Wrestling Observer website reported that Ric Flair has not signed a deal with the WWE at this time and Monday’s show was considered a guest appearance by Flair.
**The Smackdown crew is in Rochester, New York tonight to tape the December 28th edition of the show and then the entire crew is off until next Wednesday when they start their post Christmas house shows.
**Triple H and Bruno Sammartino were rumored to be meeting on Tuesday with the WWE in Pittsburgh for the television tapings. Hunter has made a big push to have Sammartino inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year at Madison Square Garden with Sammartino steadfast that he is not interested. If ever there is a year to do it it’s next year at MSG and would likely have a big nostalgia appeal for the New York market and capturing a generation of older wrestling fans that have likely moved on from the current product.
**There is a great story on Daniel Bryan meeting a 7-year old child named Connor Michalek, who has brain cancer and tapping out to the No Lock. The story is at http://withleather.uproxx.com/2012/12/wwe-daniel-bryan-visits-kid-with-cancer-no-lock-video.
**One of our listeners spotted Kevin Steen at the TLC event on Sunday night in Brooklyn. Steen was said to have looked exhausted following his Ladder Match with El Generico from a few hour earlier in New York. It is unknown if Steen was visiting people at the show or taking the show in on his own.

You can post your submissions on The LAW board at http://lawradio.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=shows&action=display&thread=2223.
**The WWE has announced they will be holding a special Fan Fest on Saturday January 26th in Phoenix, Arizona in conjunction with the Royal Rumble the next night. They will be doing two separate panel discussions at the event with one covering the Montreal Screwjob and another on DX (guests on the panel have yet to be announced). Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am EST.
**WWE.com has a great article on the 2006 re-launch of ECW with comments from Paul Heyman, Tommy Dreamer, Joey Styles, Stevie Richards, Matt Striker and Mick Foley. The comment reflect a lot of frustration at the time and what were the key reasons for the project failing including Dreamer attempting to quit the WWE after the December to Dismember card in 2006.
**The WWE sent out a press release promoting the success of the WWE app on Monday during the Slammy Awards with 151,000 downloads of the app on Monday along with 583,000 votes during the Slammy Awards with a total of over 3-million downloads of the app since it launched. In their release they stated that the “Kiss of the Year” category received the most votes with 95,581 compared to Superstar of the Year (93,805), LOL Moment of the Year (81,131), Trending Now (74,386) and Match of the Year (70,568).
**Matt Hardy is scheduled for the Ring of Honor television tapings on January 5th in Baltimore, Maryland. Hardy is also scheduled for the ROH card on January 19th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
**The Pro Wrestling Syndicate group is planning to hold two shows over WrestleMania weekend next year in Metuchen, New Jersey. Their first show on April 4th will feature Demolition taking on The Rock ‘n Roll Express and special guest “Superstar” Billy Graham attending the show. Their second night on April 5th will feature John Morrison working the show against La Parka with Bret Hart and Graham appearing at the show. The Hart appearance will be interesting depending on whether Hart is going to be used that weekend for the WWE Hall of Fame or any other capacities where the WWE tends to get exclusivity on their guys.
**The Ultimate Warrior is also going to be in town for WrestleMania weekend and will be doing an autograph signing on Sunday April 7th at 9am at WrestleCon in Seacaucus, New Jersey.
**John Morrison will also be working the January 25th Dragon Gate USA event in Santa Maria, California for one-night and fans are able to vote on who he faces that night. DG USA is doing a three-show loop that weekend with shows in Huntington Park, California on January 26th and 27th.
LAW MMA UPDATE
**Coming up tomorrow on The MMA Report I will be chatting with the recently retired Mark Hominick, comic book creator Joe Antonacci, who has just launched a new MMA themed book entitled “Joe Palooka” and for the first time ever The LAW’s Dan Lovranski and Jason Agnew will join me for a triangle table chat. The show will be up tomorrow on iTunes by subscribing to The MMA Report with John Pollock and also airs Friday nights at 11pm EST on TSN 1050 Toronto.
**Loretta Hunt of SI.com reported this morning that she spoke with Bellator C.E.O. Bjorn Rebney and he confirmed that Eddie Alvarez has received a contract offer from the UFC and that Bellator now has a two-week “matching period” to decide if they will push forward to re-sign Alvarez or let him leave.
**Patrick Cote has announced that he is dropping down to welterweight for his next fight following news that Alessio Sakara would not be able to fight Cote at UFC 158 on March 16th in Montreal. Sakara was forced to pull out of the fight due to kidney issues and also wanted the rematch with Cote outside of Canada. It is unknown if Cote will fight someone at 170 on the UFC 158 card but he stated on Twitter he has been thinking about dropping down in weight for a year.
**The Season 7 finale for Bellator this past Friday night averaged 191,000 viewers featuring Alexander Volkov defeating Richard Hale for the vacant Heavyweight title in the finals of this season’s tournament. The show was also scheduled to feature the finals of the Lightweight tournament but before the fight could take place the commission in Indiana would not allow 20-year old Marcin Held to compete due to his age and fighting at a casino.
**Saturday night’s TUF 16 Finale averaged 1,300,000 viewers on FX while the undercard on FUEL TV averaged 104,000 viewers and hence why someone like Mike Pyle was annoyed he was on the undercard of the show.
**Friday night’s UFC on FX 6 card from Australia averaged 972,000 viewers and the undercard on FUEL TV averaged 96,000 viewers.
**A heads up to listeners that Jason Agnew and I will be doing a post show right after UFC 155 on December 29th on TSN 1050 Toronto.
**Todd Martin at Sherdog.com has an interesting piece on MMA’s Mt. Rushmore at http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/1/MMAs-Mount-Rushmore-48395.
**USA Today is reporting that Karlos Vemola has suffered an injury and is off of the UFC 155 card on December 29th where he was scheduled to fight Chris Leben. The same outlet reports that Strikeforce fighter Derek Brunson has verbally agreed to step in and fight Leben on the card. The Leben Vs Vemola fight was originally scheduled for the undercard of UFC 155 but was bumped up to the main card after the Phil Davis Vs Forrest Griffin fight was scratched from the event. The UFC is also working to add the Melvin Guillard Vs Jamie Varner fight to this event but that is not official at this time.
**Cody McKenzie is also off of the UFC 155 card where he was scheduled to fight Leonard Garcia. The UFC is searching for a new opponent for Garcia at this time.
**MMAJunkie.com is reporting that the featherweight bout between Erik Koch and Ricardo Lamas is scheduled to be the fourth and final televised bout for the UFC on FOX 6 card coming up on January 26th in Chicago, Illinois. The other three fights scheduled for the broadcast are Demetrious Johnson Vs John Dodson for the Flyweight Title, Quinton Jackson Vs Glover Teixeira and a lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.
