IJF Releases Year-End World Rankings
The International Judo Federation has compiled the statistics for 2012 to bring us a comprehensive rankings list of the top pound-for-pound judokas in the world. The points-based rankings are designed to weigh Grand Slam, Grand Prix, World Cup, and other IJF-sanctioned tournament results, as well as those from this year’s London Olympics.
French Olympic gold medalist Lucie Décosse was the only judoka to top 1900 points this year, and as such closes out the year as the top pound-for-pound judo competitor in the world. Fellow gold medalist and countryman Teddy Riner was the top male competitor, topping 1800 points while competing in the +100 kg division.
Here’s a look at the full rankings along with their respective point totals via intjudo.eu:

WTF Issues New Licensing Mandate
Starting in 2013, the World Taekwondo Federation will now require their competitors to acquire official Global Athlete Licenses to compete in any WTF-sanctioned event, be it junior, senior, kyorugi or poomsae. The licenses will require athletes to adhere to a number of stipulations, such as being members in good standing of their country’s national TKD organizations, providing official Kukkiwon documentation, and submitting a small fee. The first event affecting Canadian competitors will be the US Open, running from February 19th-23rd. Senior competitors wishing to compete in the event will need to submit all required documentation to Taekwondo Canada by January 23rd.
NCAA Wrestling Quick Hits
Lehigh starting 165-pounder Eric Hess will be on the shelf indefinitely with health issues stemming from his successful treatment of Hodgkins Lymphoma. Hess, who compiled an impressive 155-14 high school record, was diagnosed with the disease back in 2010, but was able to beat it after successful chemotherapy and radiation treatments. In this, his first year of eligibility to return to competition, Hess was diagnosed with hypoxemia, a condition that leaves him below-average level of oxygen in his blood. "My doctors have reassured me that these symptoms are not caused by a recurrence of cancer,” said Hess. “However they currently cannot give a definitive prognosis on my condition.”
Thirteenth-ranked Pitt scored a big 38-6 victory over Cleveland State this week to improve to 3-2 on the season. It was a back and forth affair early on, with both sides trading the leads. Pitt was able to pull away after redshirt Ronnie Garbinsky scored a major decision in his dual debut, scoring a bonus point for 3:49 of riding time. Pitt scored bonus points in seven of their eight individual wins.
The Cowboys Oklahoma State showed off their brand new black uniforms in a 37-6 thumping of Bucknell earlier this week, keeping them at a perfect 7-0 in duals on the season. The Cowboys registered three pins on the day, none more impressive than Jon Morrison’s, who pinned opponent Paul Petro in only 43 seconds, marking a three-match shutout streak for the seventh-ranked Cowboy. OSU is back at it on New Year’s Day at the Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Southern Scuffle event.
Former Kickboxer Declared Unfit For Trial In Drug Smuggling Case
Adam Watt, a former four-time world kickboxing champion who was charged in a massive performance-enhancing drug smuggling case has been declared unfit for trial after suffering a vicious attack in prison. Watt has had difficulty with concentration, speech, and even staying awake after being struck in the back of the head by another inmate who was wielding a 15-pound sandwich maker inside a pillowcase. Watt was facing charges in connection to a smuggling operation that would have seen 210 kg of pseudoephedrine smuggled from Congo to Australia inside tins of coconut milk. His co-defendants include Dutch arms dealer Loek Weerden and fellow former kickboxer Jan Plas.
