Aisling Daly vs. Katja Kankaanpaa

Round 1:

The ladies opt not to high five at the beginning of the fight as they both look to land some bombs. Daly backs Kankaanpaa up to the cage, but quickly gets flipped over, finding herself with her back to the fence. Kankaanpaa scores with a takedown but Daly nearly catches her in an armbar. Kankaanpaa drops into side control and begins dropping bombs on Daly’s face. Daly can’t seem to work her way out of this position as Kankaanpaa is making herself very heavy here. The referee warns the ladies to work and Kankaanpaa instantly slips into a north-south and a Bravo choke. Daly powers her way to the feet but eats some big knees to the face in doing so. Kankaanpaa now grinds Daly against the cage before dropping her hard with another takedown. Time expires with Kankaanpaa raining down with ground and pound.

10-9 Kankaanpaa

Round 2:

Both ladies come out swinging to start the round before Kankaanpaa backs Daly into the cage. Daly briefly tries to work a guillotine and throws some knees, but nothing seems to be getting through to Kankaanpaa. Kankaanpaa now has Daly’s back, making her pay for each opening with strong knees and punches. Daly went in looking for a leg trip but winds up on her back eating punches and elbows from Kankaanpaa. Daly eats some heavy shots before working back to her feet, eating more knees to the face on her way up. They’re barely back to the feet before Kankaanpaa drops Daly onto her back again. Kankaanpaa works several awkward looking submission attempts on Daly’s open arm. Daly is able to get out, but gives up a full mount in the process. As the girls work their way to the feet, Daly gets backed into the fence again, getting simply overpowered by Kankaanpaa.

10-9 Kankaanpaa

Round 3:

The ladies stay on the feet to start the round, as Daly throws some unique standing hammerfists. Kankaanpaa scores with a head kick that has the crowd excited. Daly is trying to cut out the distance now, taking the fight back to the cage, working hard and eventually succeeding in a leg trip takedown. The takedown goes nowhere fast though, as both ladies are back to the feet quickly. Daly is intent on imposing her will in the cage clinch and ground game, but Kankaanpaa is too strong, reversing each takedown attempt. The two finally separate and start trading bombs recklessly. Daly looks gassed and desperate, knowing she needs to finish her opponent. Daly throws several powerful knees, but time expires before she can do any significant damage.

Round 2:

Betorangal uses his footwork to circle Mason. Betorangal begins letting loose with some strong combinations. Mason shoots in for another successful takedown. Mason starts grinding him down with some ground and pound, but Betorangal is displaying some good ground defense. Mason is making himself very heavy, pinning Betorangal and giving him very little room to breathe. Mason transitions from punches to a guillotine attempt, but Betorangal again shows good defense. With little progress, the referee stands the two up with 30 seconds remaining. Betorangal looks tired after the grinding groundwork, as Mason scores one more takedown as time expires.

10-9 Mason

Round 3:

Final round kicks off with Betorangal dancing around and hanging his hands, right before Mason puts him squarely onto his back once again with another takedown. Mason sticks to the game plan from the first two rounds, grinding on Betorangal with ground and pound from the full guard. The referee stops the action as Mason hits Betorangal with a headbutt. The referee declares it intentional and deducts a point from Mason. When action resumes, Betorangal lands a flying knee, but is planted right back onto his back again. Betorangal looks reinvigorated by the point deduction, but Mason’s top control is just too strong. Mason’s ground and pound really starting to open up now as he lands some solid shots. The two men eventually get back to the feet but remain in a grinding cage clinch with Redmond grinding Roddy against the cage with knees and punches. Roddy flips Redmond around and controls him again before dropping him with one more takedown as time expires. Incredibly close first round.
