The 2013 Copa Podio wrapped up earlier this week and Rodolfo Vieira, ranked No. 1 in the world, took home the big prize in dominant fashion. Vieira outscored his opposition 28-1 on the day and didn’t concede a single point until the championship round, where he battled world No. 4 Leo Nogueira to a 3-1 victory. Vieira also had a pair of finishes along the war, choking out 26th-ranked Alexandro Ceconi in the opening round and armbarring Alex Souza in the semi-finals. Also on the event was a thrilling superfight between Leandro Lo and Felipe Preguica, where Lo was able to pull out the win with only 10 seconds remaining.

Superkombat Seeking Regional Partners Globally

European kickboxing promotion Superkombat has announced plans for global expansion in 2013, as they aim to land partnership deals between regional promotions. The basis of the potential partnerships is to acquire and share regional talent between promotions to help add name value for all sides involved. This comes on the heels of the news that Superkombat had inked partnerships with both K-1 Global and the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations, which began with Superkombat’s final GP event of 2012, which was co-billed with K-1. The former global superpower in the sport, K-1 has also officially been dropped from Spike TV, leaving the company seeking a lifeline in the battle to remain relevant in a kickboxing landscape now dominated by GLORY. This type of partnership strategy was utilized by K-1 when they originally built themselves into the premier promotion in the sport during the height of their popularity.
