Golovkin-Vera In Play for Upcoming HBO Date

Corey Erdman / January 22, 2013 - 12:51pm

Middleweight contender Brian Vera has a serious test in front of him this Friday in Verona, New York when he takes on former junior middleweight titlist Sergiy Dzinziruk on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

But according to his manager David Watson, he could have the "most feared man in the middleweight division" in front of him next if he comes out on top this week.

Watson told Fight Network last night that he and Vera had been informed that a bout with Gennady Golovkin is possible assuming his charge is victorious on Friday. Golovkin has already planned for two return dates in 2013, and it's assumed that HBO would pick up both of them.

Vera's major victories have come over Andy Lee and Sergio Mora (twice), and the tough Texan has become a reliable action fighter on American airwaves. In his most recent and notable appearance though, he lost a unanimous decision to Lee in a rematch.

With Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez either tied up or off the table, the WBO champion Golovkin is in need of challengers as he waits around for the big money names in the division to tap him on the shoulder.

Prior to Watson being contacted, Vera spoke to Tha Boxing Voice about wanting to face the winner of Golovkin and Gabriel Rosado last weekend.

"Obviously I'm fighting a good fighter with this Sergiy dude, so I think it'll put me back in that position. I believe they (HBO) turned me down the last time because I hadn't been performing like I should have, so this gives me a chance to fight and show that we're capable of fighting in these big fights," said Vera.

Considering Jonathan Gonzalez was given an HBO slot and couldn't get past Dzinziruk, surely Vera is asking "why not me?"
