LAW Feb. 12 Update - IOC Wrestling Vote Hits Wrestling, MMA

John Pollock / February 13, 2013 - 5:00pm

**The newest edition of Review-A-Wai is up on the website with Wai Ting and myself reviewing the TNA British Boot Camp show at http://fightnetwork.com/news/36398:review-a-wai-british-boot-camp/. This is the show that ran on Challenge TV in the U.K. in January featuring Rock Star Spud, Marty Scurll and The Blossom Twins competing for a TNA contract.

**If you missed this week’s edition of Review-A-Raw with Wai and I chatting Raw in Nashville on Monday night than you can download the show at http://fightnetwork.com/news/36361:feb.-12-edition-of-review-a-raw/ or subscribe to Live Audio Wrestling on iTunes or listen on the free Stitcher app for smart phone users.

**The major sports story this week is the International Olympic Committee’s vote to recommend that wrestling be removed from the Olympic Games following the 2016 summer games after a meeting in Switzerland on Tuesday morning. The results of this vote are far and wide when it comes to combat sports with tons of people outraged by the decision and questioning what this mean for the sport in both the United States and abroad after 2016. It was speculated that modern pentathlon was the sport that was likely to be voted out but instead received a pass during the vote. Amateur wrestling within the United States is a massive sport but one that has shown cracks for a long time with some blame being placed upon both FILA (the world governing body for wrestling) and USA Wrestling for not evolving with the times and making the sport appeal to those that don’t participate. There is no question that the NCAA Finals every spring are a gigantic live event draw and filling professional sports sized arenas and doing modest numbers on ESPN (who carry the finals). The sport is not a huge ratings success at the Olympics and that is one of the criteria the IOC board took into account when casting their vote. If this was a case where the numbers were significant it would be a strong argument behind NBC (the U.S. rights holders for the Olympics for the 2016 games) to sway their influence for inclusion of the sport at the Olympics. The bigger questions will be take years and years to fully be answered if this exclusion results in less funding to USA Wrestling (almost a given when you take the Olympic involvement away) and school programs removing wrestling as a result and potential wrestlers not getting into the sport and slowly disappearing from the culture. Although it not a direct pipeline the history of pro wrestling and MMA is very rich in high level amateur wrestlers wanting to continue their careers in those respective industries and the history of both industries is painted significantly different if you take out the influence of amateur wrestlers. TNA is taking a stance in the fight to save the sport with Kurt Angle doing numerous interviews and pushing for change within the sport. A final vote will be taken in September to remove the sport with many feeling it is extremely unlikely the IOC will reverse their position.

**Tonight’s edition of WWE Main Event features a non-title match between Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler and the return of The Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho and The Miz appearing as his guest. The show airs at 8pm EST on Ion Television and was taped Tuesday night in Little Rock, Arkansas.

**WWE Raw did a 3.16 rating and averaged 4,260,000 viewers on Monday night with the first hour performing best with slight declines for hours two and three. Last week’s number was abnormally high averaging 4.8 million and was a tremendous number considering the fact that The Rock was not on the show.

**A tag match between Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow and Tensai & Brodus Clay has been added to the pre-show of the WWE Elimination Chamber show this Sunday in New Orleans, Louisiana and will take place two-weeks after Rhodes and Sandow broke up on television.

**Dragon Gate USA has announced that Shingo will be working their WrestleMania weekend shows and have announced Johnny Gargano defending the Open the Freedom Gate Title against Shingo on Saturday April 6th in Secaucus.

**Ring of Honor has announced that due to circumstances beyond their control they have had to move their April 27th card from Richmond, Virginia to a May 18th date with tickets being honored for the new date, which is at the same venue.

**WrestleCon has announced that Hulk Hogan has been added to the Legends of the Ring convention on Saturday April 6th where fans will be able to get a photo and autograph from Hogan for $150 and can pay $75 for additional items to be signed.

**Jonathan Snowden has an interview with TNA’s Kurt Angle on the Bleacher Report website discussing the IOC’s vote to remove wrestling from the Olympics effective in 2020 and how FILA (wrestling’s governing body dropped the ball) and also discusses his match with Wes Brisco at Lockdown next month at http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1527872-former-wwe-and-tna-champion-kurt-angle-wrestling-in-the-olympics-tna-more.

**Bully Ray has posted on Twitter that he is working through a quadriceps injury that he says was hurt during the tables match that aired last week on Impact.

LAW MMA UPDATE

**Tomorrow on The MMA Report I will be chatting with World Series of Fighting president Ray Sefo and MMAFighting.com’s Luke Thomas about the IOC vote to eliminate wrestling from the Olympics and I will also preview the FUEL 7 card set for London, England this Saturday.

**Below are the three-parts to Dana White’s media scrum from London, England:

**On Tuesday night Ariel Helwani reported on UFC Tonight that the May 25th UFC 160 card in Las Vegas, Nevada over Memorial Day weekend will be headlined by Cain Velasquez defending the UFC heavyweight title against Antonio Silva with a co-feature between Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos. It was on Memorial Day weekend last year that Velasquez destroyed Silva at UFC 146 but since that time Silva has defeated Travis Browne and Overeem to earn the title shot.

**A middleweight bout between Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold is set for the spring with a date and location to be announced but UFC president Dana White stated it would take place in Brazil. This will be Rockhold’s first fight in the UFC as the outgoing Strikeforce middleweight champion and not fought since July of last year where he defeated Tim Kennedy. Belfort is coming off a stoppage victory over Michael Bisping in January.

**The weigh-ins for Bellator take place later today in Charlotte, North Carolina with the card headlined by Eduardo Dantas defending the bantamweight title against Marcos Galvao and the four quarterfinal bouts of this season’s middleweight tournament.

**For what it’s worth UFC president Dana White is stating that if Alexander Gustafsson defeats Gegard Mousasi on April 6th in Sweden that he would be next in line for the UFC light heavyweight champion (Jon Jones defends the title against Chael Sonnen on April 27th).

**With Manny Gamburyan injured and off the UFC 157 card on February 23rd the UFC has taken his opponent Chad Mendes and placed him on the undercard of the UFC on FOX 7 event on April 20th where he will take on “Mr. FOX Undercard” Clay Guida in San Jose, California. This will be the third FOX undercard Guida has been a part of.

**The April 13th Ultimate Fighter Season 17 Finale will be headlined by Demetrious Johnson facing off with John Moraga for the flyweight title in Las Vegas, Nevada. They have also announced a female bout between Miesha Tate and Cat Zingano for this card and a heavyweight bout between Gabriel Gonzaga and the returning Travis Browne.

**The UFC has announced that they have signed female bantamweights Alexis Davis and Sarah McMann, who had both been competing for Invicta FC. McMann is an Olympic silver medalist and presents a great storyline if she could get a title shot against Ronda Rousey and promote it as a battle of Olympic medalists. McMann has recently been training with both Marcelo Garcia and was also in Montreal training at Tristar.

**Next week Fight Network will be carrying the UFC 157 press conference live on Thursday at 4pm EST and the weigh-ins the following day at 7pm EST from Las Vegas, Nevada.

**Invicta FC 5 has been announced for Friday April 5th in Kansas City, Missouri with two title fights headlining the show with Jessica Penne defending the 105-pound championship against Michelle Waterson and the first Invicta FC 125-pound champion will be crowned when Barb Honchak takes on Vanessa Porto.  This is a real deep card with Sarah Kaufman fighting Leslie Smith, Amanda Nunes meets Kaitlin Young and Zoila Gurgel will take on Jennifer Maia among the fourteen fights already announced for the show.

**Between professional wrestling and MMA I don’t know if there has ever been a more insane weekend than WrestleMania weekend this year, which will include all of the events in New York and New Jersey attached to WrestleMania, WrestleCon etc but in MMA there will be an Invicta FC event on Friday night, the UFC runs Sweden on Saturday night and New Japan Pro Wrestling will hold their next iPPV on Sunday.
