LAW Aug. 12 Update - WWE Network Launch Notes in Canada
John Pollock / August 12, 2014 - 9:42pm
**Today’s Review-A-Raw is up on the site with Wai Ting and I chatting last night’s show, the build for SummerSlam plus our thoughts on the 30-minute Cena vs. Lesnar special as well as Episode 1 of Spike TV’s Gym Rescue up at http://fightnetwork.com/news/49576:aug.-12-edition-of-review-a-raw/.
**The WWE Network launched internationally today and to say the least it was an underwhelming launch for Canadian viewers with access to the channel. In Canada it is $11.99 per month for the live channel (on Rogers channel 512) and the VOD service (Rogers channel 397) and despite reports last week, there will not be a free preview and neither WWE nor Rogers ever stated it was a “free preview” but many assumed when they said it would be offered as a “preview” that it must been a free one. It is still worth it to buy because the pay-per-views will be available but if you are comparing it to the U.S. version there is no comparison. A mere 36 hours of content if currently available on demand with six SummerSlam events (1992, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005), Great American Bash 1989, Bash at the Beach (1994, 1996, 1998) and ECW Heatwave (1998, 1999) and One Night Stand from June 2005. The events were poorly labeled without even listing the event name and were labeled by a numbering system, no logos for the events with an “Image Not Available” icon, there was a listing for Chris Jericho’s documentary that confused him with Brock Lesnar in the description and just felt like a rush job to get thing up for today and was poor quality control and a terrible first impression.
There are also a lot of customers having problems with the live channel not working and that is dependent on the cable box you have and they are working on correcting those issues for those that have signed up and only able to access the VOD service.
**The WWE also sent out a press release today promoting the international expansion of the WWE Network and have also made a change to their pricing structure. On July 31st they announced that they would be changing the pricing so that those wanting to just sign up for one-month would be billed $19.99 but have lowered that price to $12.99 for one-month with no further commitment. This means you can watch SummerSlam (and theoretically WrestleMania next year) for $12.99 and that’s it.
**Raw averaged 4,300,000 viewers for last night’s show off hours of 4,080,000, 4,360,000 and the third jumping up to 4,460,000 building to the birthday bash with Hulk Hogan and the surprise guests.
***AAA is going all out promoting Alberto Del Rio for this Sunday’s TripleMania event at Arena Cuidad in Mexico.
**The WWE officially announced the signing of Kevin Steen today with a photo posted with Steen and Triple H inside a NXT ring with Steen wearing a NXT t-shirt. In the cases of Steen, Prince Devitt and KENTA, they have all been introduced under those names but it won’t be known for sure until they debut on television if they will be keeping their respective names.
**Independent wrestler Chelsea Green was the performer on Raw, who played Megan Miller last night in a memorable segment. She is based out of British Columbia and has worked for ECCW among other promotions.
**A new edition of Review-A-Wai will be up tomorrow morning with Wai Ting and I reviewing SummerSlam from August of 1994 featuring The Undertaker vs. The Undertaker as well as Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart in a steel cage (here’s a hint – one of them is one of the best matches of 1994 and one of them is probably the worst).
**Also on the site tomorrow, Alex Greenfield will be filling in for Court Bauer this week on Bauer & Pollock as look ahead to SummerSlam this weekend, chat the G-1 tournament, Alberto Del Rio firing and lots more. That show will be up on the site Wednesday evening.
**Ring of Honor has announced Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish will defend the tag titles against The Young Bucks in a 2/3 Falls Match on September 6th in Toronto at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
LAW MMA UPDATE
**The biggest fight of 2014 has been postponed with Jon Jones pulling out of the main event of UFC 178 against Daniel Cormier with a torn meniscus and sprained ankle. The fight has been moved to January 3rd of next year in Las Vegas. The new main event of UFC 178 will be Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso for the flyweight title, which was scheduled to be the co-main event on August 30th at UFC 177 alongside the bantamweight title bout with T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao. This could potentially make January 3rd one of the biggest cards in UFC history with Ronda Rousey wanting to fight on that card and being paired with the grudge bout between Jones and Cormier, could be a massive show.
**UFC light heavyweight Ryan Bader will be on The MMA Report this week as we’ll chat this Saturday’s main event against Ovince St. Preux and more.
**Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo speaks with Mike Bohn at MMA Junkie about the WWE attempting to sign him prior to joining the UFC at http://mmajunkie.com/2014/08/henry-cejudo-wwe-deal-was-in-the-works-before-ufc-signing. Cejudo will debut for the UFC later this month at UFC 177 in the flyweight division against Scott Jorgensen.
**The UFC has signed bantamweights Anthony Birchak and Joe Soto and they will fight at UFC 177 on August 30th in Sacramento, California.
**A welterweight bout between Nordine Taleb and Jingliang Li has been added to the UFC Fight Night 54 card on October 4th in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
