Calgary, Alberta – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced Thursday a $25,000 donation through its UFC Community Works® program to the Calgary Food Bank. A nationwide initiative launched by UFC Canada, the UFC Community Works® program is designed to make meaningful contributions to the Canadian communities where UFC® events are held. On July 21, the UFC® willmake its debut in the Province of Alberta with the sold out UFC® 149 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Community Works® program name itself is a double entendre – it speaks to the notion that the UFC is going to do good work in the community and that communities work when they come together. UFC Canada is looking to be a catalyst to promoting good works in good communities.
On Tuesday, July 17, UFC® Director of Canadian Operations Tom Wright, Canadian UFC® fighters Nick Ring and Mitch Clarke, who are both fighting on the card Saturday night at UFC® 149, arrived with bags of non-perishable food donations. Joined by Calgary Stampeders President and CEO Lyle Bauer and Stampeders players Eric Fraser and Cory Mace, the group then toured the Calgary Food Bank facility, stuffed hampers, packed food boxes and met with some children and volunteers.
At the Calgary Stampeders game against the rival Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday, July 19, Tom Wright, UFC® Middleweight Michael Bisping and UFC® Welterweight Thiago Alves were on hand during half-time to make the official cheque presentation to the Calgary Food Bank to Lyle Bauer and Simon Lau, a member of the Board of Directors at the Calgary Food Bank.
