It is with deep sadness that Fight Network reports world-renowned boxing coach and commentator Emanuel “Manny” Steward has passed away after battling diverticulitis, a severe stomach virus.
Steward has trained and mentored a who’s who of big names in the sweet science since 1971, including Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield, Wladimir Klitschko and Lennox Lewis.
A native of West Virginia, Steward grew up in Detroit, where he would become a head coach at the world-famous Kronk Gym.
Steward, who has regularly appeared as an analyst on HBO, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.
Diverticulitis was the same stomach infection that sidelined former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in 2009.
Steward was 68 at the time of his death.
