Spohn Submits Morrow at Ultimate Victory Challenge 22

COLUMBUS, Oh. (February 18, 2013) – Ultimate Victory Challenge provided a packed house at the Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday night, as UVC 22: Mayhem went down with nine professional and amateur mixed martial arts bouts.

In the night’s main event, Bellator MMA veteran and Columbus native Dan “Dragon” Spohn (7-3) snapped a three-fight losing streak with a second round victory via rear naked choke over Chicago native Robert Morrow (6-13).

Morrow appeared to be the aggressor early on in the fight, with Spohn landing multiple counter punches and angling to pick his shots. Morrow rocked Spohn midway through the first frame with a flurry, but Spohn recovered and landed a takedown to end up on top in side control. The second round was eerily similar, with Spohn landing a slam and eventually working his way to get Morrow’s back. Once he got Morrow’s back, it was academic as the black belt locked in the rear naked choke for the victory at 4:03 of the second round to earn Submission of the Night.

It was a much different Spohn, as the Buckeye MMA product secures his first submission victory since his pro debut in 2009.

In the co-main event, a fight that all of Ohio had been buzzing about for over a year finally went down. The early going was as expected, with debuting heavyweights Tim “Fatboy” Dunn (1-0) and James Dishong (0-1) trading heavy leather. The tension in the air could be cut with a knife, and it appeared like it was only a matter of time until one of the former UVC amateur champions dropped and handed his first pro loss. That moment came at 2:36 of the first frame, as Dunn landed a big left hook followed by a straight right hand to officially stamp his first pro win. Dunn’s combination provided him with the Knockout of the Night award.

The night’s third pro bout featured the UVC return of former amateur welterweight champion Isaac Steele (4-0), as the Jorge Gurgel Academy product earned a TKO due to strikes in the first round over Tennessee product Tommy Roberts (3-4).

In amateur action, the UVC Champions Series kicked off, with welterweight Nick Rizos (6-0) and bantamweight Darnell Pettis (4-0) earning future title shots. Rizos fought off a game Chris Minor (3-1) in the amateur main event, eventually securing unanimous decision with superior wrestling and jiu-jitsu. After losing the first two rounds in his bout with Chris McKinney (5-1) and fighting out of a deep triangle arm bar that appeared to have him put to sleep, Pettis landed a timely right hand that crumbled his opponent and earned him the knockout win in what was the Fight of the Night.

In the other amateur bouts, Corey Dulaney (4-0) remained unbeaten with a TKO victory over Ronnie Shoemaker (7-3) at lightweight, Lance Phillips (3-0) picked up his third stoppage win with a TKO over Dustin Sweigard (1-1) at light heavyweight, Nickolai Timbs (1-0) wrestled his way to a keylock submission over Mikey Furnier (1-2), and Jordan Schembri (2-0) kicked off the night with a TKO win over Jacob Adams (0-1) at lightweight.
