Boxing Briefs – Aug. 12 – He’s Alive

This week’s edition of ESPN 2′s Wednesday Night Fights emanates from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fl. The main event pits world-ranked junior middleweight contender Joel Julio, who has stopped 21 opponents within the first three rounds, against Jose Varela. Julio has gone on record as saying he will knock Varela out. The co-feature sees undefeated junior middleweight Joe Greene battle Colombian Jose Miguel Torres in a 12-round bout for the NABA super welterweight title.

A couple of purse bids will be held at IBF headquarters on Aug. 19. The first is an IBF junior middleweight eliminator for the number-one contender spot between former world champ Cory Spinks and Alex Bunema. A bid will also be held for “Fast” Ediie Chambers’ mandatory defense of his USBA heavyweight title against Malik Scott.

Fight News is reporting that journeyman heavyweight boxer Ralph West, who was reported as being killed at a bar on Saturday night, is alive and well. Reports of his death are the result of a case of mistaken identity.

Nikolai Valuev has extended his contract with Sauerland Event through 2011. Valuev will take on John Ruiz in three weeks time for the vacant WBA heavyweight crown.

A ten-round bout between “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis and Nasser Athumani will headline a double deature on Sept. 5 at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. In the co-featured bout, heavyweights Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson, ranked seventh by the WBA, and former titleholder Bruce Seldon will collide.

In female action from Tokyo on Monday night, Ann Marie Saccurato, ranked third by the WBC, defeated #2-ranked Fujin Raika to win the vacant WBC lightweight title after ten rounds of action. Also on the card, Momo Koseki defeated Winyu Paradorn Gym and Takahisa Masuda upset Wandee Singwangcha.

Former WBO heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster returns to Cincinnati Gardens in Cincinnati, Oh. to take on Danny Batchelder. The fight will be a twelve rounder with the NABA heavyweight title on the line.

On Sept. 15 in Mexico City, Jorge Arce returns to challenge Rafael Concepcion for the WBA interim flyweight title. Meanwhile, WBA super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares will face Chatchai Sasakul on Aug. 30, with Nobuo Nashiro and Kohei Kono also clashing for the flyweight crown. In the process, WBA will recognize three champions at 115 pounds.

Indonesian prospect Daud Cino Yordan makes his American boxing debut on Sept. 13 against Antonio Meza. The featherweight fight will be contested over ten rounds of action. Yordan is only 21 years of age and is said to be a hard puncher with championship potential.
