Golovkin Advisor Has Middleweight Solution for WBA

Ivaylo Gotzev, advisor to WBA Interim World Champion Gennady Golovkin, says he has an easy remedy to the current confusing situation among WBA Middleweight champions: The WBA should either mandate Golovkin into a fight for the full world championship or order a fight between Golovkin and “Super” champion Felix Sturm.

Gotzev was reacting to news the WBA is considering a fight between #2 rated Hassan N’Dam N’Jkam and #3 rated Avtandil Khurtsindze for their middleweight championship, bypassing Golovkin who won their interim title by knocking out Milton Nunez last August.

“The WBA elevated Felix Sturm to super champion and let him avoid fighting Golovkin as his mandatory,” recounts Gotzev. “Then they mandated that Anthony Mundine fight Golovkin for the vacant belt. We won the purse bid, but Mundine bailed because he knew he would get knocked out. Then we ended up knocking out Nunez for the interim belt. So now we don’t understand how N’Jkam can fight Khurtsindze for yet another WBA belt?”

Gotzev maintains that if the WBA goes forward with this fight, the only reasonable route for Golovkin would be for them to order a fight between Sturm and Golovkin for super champion status.

“We’re going to stay on this until we sort out this WBA mess. I’ve been in contact with them and we’ll file a formal protest if they don’t put Gennady in the fight for the regular belt or put him in against Felix Sturm. Gennady is the best middleweight in the world and we’ll fight any of those guys, one after the other. If Golovkin fights Sturm, then we’ll agree to let N’Jkam fight Khurtsindze.”

Gotzev says he’s enjoyed good relations with the WBA in the past and hopes the current confusion is just a minor issue that will be fixed quickly. “I have faith in the WBA and hope that this misunderstanding will be quickly resolved.”
