So is anyone at all surprised that another Professonial Wrestling storyline involving a real life married couple is ending in a real life divorce? Former TNA and WWE champion Kurt Angle and his wife Karen are headed for splitsville after she filed for the big D. In what seemed like a weekly version of the movie Groundhog Day,the couple would bicker and even get involved in a storyline love triangle with AJ Styles on TNA’s flagship program, IMPACT!. Ask former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan what happens when you book your spouse in a pretend on screen romance. His ex-wife Nancy ended up leaving him for her storyline paramour Chris Benoit. Unfortunately,we all know the grisly details surrounding the demise of that marriage. Rena Lesnar (Brock Lesnar’s significant other), best known as WWE Diva Sable used to be Rena Mero, wife of WWE and WCW star Marc Mero. They also did a storyline where they were arguing in front of WWE cameras and I don’t have to tell you how that turned out. One of the highest profile couples in Wrestling history were Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. They were married for years before he brought her into the business. They too would end up in divorce court .Marriage is probably the most difficult full time job on the planet but one sure fire way to ruin your home life is to pretend to hate each other in a pro wrestling storyline. The proof is in the alimony and there’s nothing fake about that. Just ask Kurt and Karen. Their “angle” is real. It’s damn real.
One of my favorite songs growing up was the Hollies’ “He Ain’t Heavy,He’s My Brother”. Google it if you’re under 30. If that song were released today, the title might be “He Ain’t Heavy,He’s A Combat Sports Athlete”. Making weight is becoming a huge issue for many of the practitioners of the “sweet science”. Last weekend, 4 boxers failed to make weight on their first tries at the official weigh-ins for their respective world championship bouts. Granted WBA/WBO/IBF Lightweight champ Nate Campbell was just .2 pounds over on his first attempt but the rules state that for title bouts you need to be right at or below the official weight limit which in this case was 135 pounds. He had no problem making it on his second try. His opponent, the undefeated Joan Guzman, a former 122 and 130 pound kingpin came in a 3.5 pounds over the limit and decided to not even attempt to lose the excess weight. That is the epitome of unprofessionalism and I hope Guzman feels the supreme wrath of the powers that be. WBC 140 pound top dog Timothy Bradley came in .3 pounds over and again, was able to make weight easily an hour later.WBC Super Welterweight titlist Sergio Mora came in 2 pounds over the 154 pound limit when he first stepped on the scale. He lost the 2 pounds and then proceeded to lose even more weight the next night when he dropped the belt back to the guy he defeated for it, Vernon Forrest. What the hell is wrong with these guys? If a teacher shows up to school unprepared to give the daily lessons to his/her students,he/she would surely be suspended and possibly terminated. If I show up for my radio show unprepared to speak (I know many of you keep hoping that will be the case one day), I too, would find myself receiving that pink piece of paper. Now,”weight gate” isn’t strictly reserved for boxing.I’m sure you remember Travis Lutter’s failure to make 185 pounds, costing him a chance at Anderson Silva’s UFC Middleweight title. This, after he spent weeks with a bunch of other guys sequestered in a home on a reality show, hoping to land the opportunity of a lifetime. Fighters draw the attention of the fairer sex like moths to a flame. One name they should add to their proverbial black books is Jenny Craig
