“Forged out of fire.”
That’s the line that has been tagged to “Ragin” Kajan Johnson. It seems very appropriate for the lightweight who has become the newest commodity in the MFC’s deepening 155-pound well. Johnson has burned through his opponents over the last five years, going 10-1 over that stretch and polishing off his last four foes inside the first two rounds with two of those victories coming before the first minute of Round 1.
Johnson (15-10-1) recently inked a multi-fight deal with Pavelich Sports that will see him make his organizational debut at Heat XC4: Hysteria against Brazilian jiu-jitsu dynamo Josh Russell (3-0). Johnson, who represents the Revolution Fight Team, has eyes on sparking the MFC’s lightweight division as well.
“He wants to fight the top guys like (the recently signed) Yves Edwards and Derrick Noble to prove he’s in the upper echelon,” said Johnson’s trainer Bill Mahood.
“Kajan always chases the finish and he’s really looking forward to fighting in the MFC. He has risen to the forefront of the 155ers and it’s time to get some bigger exposure. Being in the MFC and fighting on HDNet Fights is going to give him the chance to show the world what he’s capable of.”
Johnson got an early start to his mixed martial arts career, turning pro at 17 and even making appearances at MFC 6 and 7. His mixed results on those cards were all part of an up-and-down launch to his career – a similar situation to that of his training partner Dennis Kang.
To remedy that roller-coaster ride of results, Johnson and Mahood reshuffled the training regimen to find the right blend of style and substance.
“We had to sort out the skill package, and over the last two years we’ve found the right rhythm,” noted Mahood.
“Kajan is an extremely aggressive fighter – ultra-aggressive – but we needed to find the balance between aggression and not being reckless. We had to find the right time when being aggressive would benefit him the most. He learned the bumps and now he’s dialed in.”
The 24-year-old will definitely discover if he has dialed the right number when he faces Russell, who has submitted his last two opponents both in under two minutes.
