Quick Shots – EliteXC ‘Heat’ – Kimbo Drops Ball

Seth Petruzelli shocked the world Saturday night at EliteXC: Heat on CBS when he KO’d Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson early in the first round following a barrage of punches.

Also on the card, Jake Shields won a hard-fought battle against Muay Thai specialist Paul Daley, submitting the Cage Rage welterweight champion by armbar in the second frame. Shields successfully retained his EliteXC 170-pound crown. Daley showcased far superior standup ability, but Shields’ Brazilian jiu-jitsu prowess was the deciding factor in the bout.

Andrei Arlovski survived a first-round onslaught from former IFL heavyweight champion Roy Nelson and won by knockout in the second stanza. Nelson controlled much of the first round with grappling, but Arlovski created some distance in the second and dropped Nelson with a sharp right haymaker.

Gina Carano proved why she is known as “the face of female mixed martial arts” and earned a unanimous decision over Kelly Kobold-Gavin. Carano’s takedown defense was outstanding and she created some separation to dominate Kobold with her Muay Thai over three rounds. Judges’ scorecards were 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 for Carano.

In the opening bout on the CBS main card, Benji Radach showed off exceptional power and KO’d Murilo “Ninja” Rua in round two. Radach charged forward from the opening bell and nailed Rua with heavy shots, staggering the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
