NXT TV Report for July 13, 2010
From Louisville, Kentucky
Ashley
Valance still has her job apparently, as she and Matt Striker, did the
customary introductions to start the show. They also brought out the Nexus
guys. Wade Barrett did a brief promo, saying tonight was a celebration of their
victory over John Cena on Raw.
Lucky Cannon & Mark Henry v The Miz & Alex Riley
They
told the story that Miz didn’t want any part of Henry after last night’s angle,
so he had Riley start the match. Henry dominated and threw Riley to the floor.
Back inside, Henry continued to dominate and dared Miz to tag in. Cannon tagged
in and worked off of an arm bar. He clotheslined Riley to the floor. They then
did a spot where Cannon did a plancha but hit both Riley and the ring steps on
the way down. It sure looked like that was intentional as opposed to a blown
spot, which is baffling since it makes Cannon look clumsy and uncoordinated.
Anyway, they went to a break with the heels keeping the heat on Cannon as they
returned. Miz hit his running clothesline in the corner for a near fall. Josh
Matthews made mention of the fact that Michael Cole was now in the Raw open,
but no mention of who was taken out. Riley didn’t show a lot when working over
Cannon. Henry eventually
got the hot tag and got at Miz with some clotheslines, an
avalanche and a gorilla press slam. Miz tagged out to Riley, who immediately
walked into a world’s strongest slam for the pinfall. After the match, Mark
Henry dumped the contents of a conveniently placed garbage can onto Riley
Cannon (2-3) & Henry d. Miz & Riley (2-2)
They
did a different video piece on Alex Riley, with Miz putting him over strongly
but the others making fun of his gimmick.
Up next was
the Percy Watson talk show. They used an instrumental version of The Capitols’
classic song “Cool Jerk” as his theme. He wore his wrestling trunks to host the
show. If nothing else, Watson has good energy and a fairly unique delivery,
which can cover for a lack of substance (a big problem, giving who is writing
these promos). He had MVP as his guest and thanked him for mentoring him so
far. He then brought out the rookies, with the idea that they were going to all
jump MVP. Of course, MVP just asked the pros to walk down the ramp. All of this
led to Matt Striker announcing a battle royal with Wade Barrett interjecting
himself and the Nexus into the match.
20-Man Battle Royal
The
Nexus guys immediately cleared the ring; it’s such a huge logic hole that you
can do that with impunity in a battle royal. It always has been that way, but
at least in the past it wasn’t taken advantage of all of the time. Everyone but
Nexus then immediately ganged up on Henry and eliminated him. That began the
trend of Nexus putting the boots to guys as they were eliminated. Cottonwood
went out shortly thereafter. MVP was next out but Kingston and Morrison saved
him as Nexus went for another attack. Lucky Cannon was eliminated away from
camera range somewhere in here. Nexus hit the ring after a commercial break.
They were consistently getting the better of the exchanges they were in with
Otunga throwing out Percy Watson. Barrett threw out McGillicutty, as the Nexus
group huddled in the corner. Husky Harris tried to attack and was put out.
Meanwhile, Alex Riley got a decent-sized gash on the back of his neck or head
somehow, so Jack Cone entered the ring and told him to leave in an incredibly
awkward moment. They couldn’t come up with an improptu spot to eliminate him in
a logical fashion? The announcers made no mention of any of this. Zack Ryder
then dumped Kaval, which eliminated the rookies and left five pros against six
members of Nexus. The story was that the pros couldn’t work together as Miz
dumped Ryder from behind after they all huddled together. Miz then tried to
talk his way into Nexus and when that didn’t work, the Miz eliminated himself.
Rhodes then sat back and allowed Nexus to work over Kingston and Morrison
six-on-two. After giving the two veterans some offense, they were eventually
put out. Rhodes tried to make peace but Nexus turned on him and was eliminated.
Apparently, that ended the match as Nexus was announced as the winners; they
never made it clear that it was some kind of a team concept. After the match,
they did the usual spiel where all the Nexus guys hit their finishers.
Matt
Striker tried to do an interview after the match but Barrett ordered him out of
the ring. Barrett then did a promo, saying no one can understand what’s going
on because it’s part of a bigger picture. He debuted a new catchphrase saying
“you’re either Nexus or against us.”
